How scendere works

Scendere is moving downward: scendere le scale, scendere in cantina, scendere a valle. It is also the verb for getting off public transport and out of cars, with da: scendo dal treno, scendi dalla macchina. Prices, temperatures and numbers scendono too: la febbre è scesa. From an upstairs flat, scendo means “I'm coming down,” and Italians use it even for going out into the street. In politics and sport, scendere in campo means entering the field or the race. Its opposite is salire, which follows the same auxiliary rule.

Scendere takes essere when it has no direct object, and the participle agrees with the subject: sono scesa dall'autobus, i prezzi sono scesi, le temperature sono scese sotto zero. It takes avere when the stairs, slope or path you go down is a direct object: ho sceso le scale di corsa, abbiamo sceso il sentiero in un'ora. The tables show the essere forms.

Scendere in context

  • Presente: Scusi, scendo alla prossima fermata. (Excuse me, I'm getting off at the next stop.)
  • Passato Prossimo: Siamo scesi dal treno a Firenze e abbiamo preso un taxi. (We got off the train in Florence and took a taxi.)
  • Imperfetto: Di notte la temperatura scendeva sotto zero. (At night the temperature dropped below zero.)
  • Passato Remoto: Il re scese dalla carrozza e salutò la folla. (The king stepped down from the carriage and greeted the crowd.)
  • Futuro Semplice: Scenderò in cantina a prendere il vino. (I'll go down to the cellar to get the wine.)
  • Imperativo: Scendi subito, è pronta la cena! (Come down right now, dinner's ready!)

Common expressions with scendere

  • scendere a patti: to come to terms, to compromise
  • scendere in campo: to take the field, to enter the race
  • scendere nei dettagli: to go into detail

Common mistakes

  • Sono sceso dall'autobus in piazza., not Ho sceso dall'autobus in piazza. (I got off the bus in the square.). Getting off something has no direct object, so scendere takes essere.
  • Scendo dall'autobus qui., not Scendo l'autobus qui. (I'm getting off the bus here.). The vehicle you leave is introduced by da: dal treno, dalla macchina, dall'autobus.

Frequently asked questions

Does scendere take essere or avere?
Mostly essere: sono sceso, è scesa, siamo scesi. Use avere only when what you go down is a direct object: ho sceso le scale.
What is the past participle of scendere?
Sceso: sono sceso, ho sceso. It is irregular, so scenduto is wrong.
How do you say “to get off” a bus or train in Italian?
Scendere da: scendo dal tram, è scesa dal treno. Getting on is salire su: salgo sull'autobus.
