Chiedere means “to ask” and “to ask for.” You use it for questions, favours, prices and permission, so it appears in almost every conversation a visitor to Italy has.
Infinitive
chiedere
English
to ask, to ask for
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
chiesto
Gerund
chiedendo
Irregular past participle: the participle is chiesto, so the compound tenses read ho chiesto, avevo chiesto, avrei chiesto. The passato remoto has the strong forms chiesi, chiese and chiesero, while tu chiedesti, noi chiedemmo and voi chiedeste stay regular. Every other tense follows credere with no change: chiedo, chiedevo, chiederò, chiederei, che io chieda. Richiedere (to require, to request) conjugates the same way: richiesto, richiese.
The thing you ask is the direct object and the person you ask takes a: chiedo l'ora a un passante, ho chiesto il conto al cameriere. When a pronoun replaces the person, it is an indirect pronoun: gli chiedo, le ho chiesto, ti chiedo scusa. To ask someone to do something, use di plus an infinitive: mi ha chiesto di aspettare. Chiedere di qualcuno means asking after a person or asking to speak to them: ha chiamato Marco e ha chiesto di te. The pronominal chiedersi means “to wonder”: mi chiedo perché non risponda.
Chiedere takes avere: ho chiesto, hanno chiesto un rimborso. The participle agrees with a preceding direct object pronoun (la ricevuta? L'ho chiesta), but not with the indirect pronoun for the person you asked: le ho chiesto un favore. The reflexive chiedersi uses essere: ci siamo chiesti cosa fare.

Common mistakes
Ho chiesto il conto., not Ho chiesto per il conto. (I asked for the bill.). Chiedere means “to ask for” on its own. The thing requested is the direct object, with no preposition.
Ho chiesto a Marco dove abita., not Ho chiesto Marco dove abita. (I asked Marco where he lives.). The person you ask is an indirect object in Italian, so it needs a. With a pronoun: gli ho chiesto.
Ho fatto una domanda., not Ho chiesto una domanda. (I asked a question.). Italian says fare una domanda. Chiedere is used with what you want to know or get, not with the noun domanda.
Chiesto. It is irregular, so the passato prossimo is ho chiesto, never ho chieduto. The same participle builds the other compound tenses: avevo chiesto, avrò chiesto, abbia chiesto.
Does chiedere take essere or avere?
Avere: ho chiesto, abbiamo chiesto. Only chiedersi, meaning “to wonder,” switches to essere, with agreement: mi sono chiesta, si sono chiesti.
Is chiedere irregular?
Partly. The participle chiesto and the passato remoto chiesi, chiese, chiesero are irregular. The present, imperfect, future, conditional and subjunctive are all regular.
What is the difference between chiedere and domandare?
They are close synonyms and take the same structure: domandare qualcosa a qualcuno. Chiedere is more common in speech. Domandare is regular, with the participle domandato, and it sits naturally beside the noun domanda.
