How rispondere works

Rispondere a is answering someone or something: rispondere a una domanda, al telefono, a un'email, a mia madre. What you say in reply can follow directly or with che: ha risposto di sì, mi ha risposto che non poteva venire. Because the person is an indirect object, the pronouns are gli, le and loro: le ho risposto subito. Rispondere male is answering rudely or talking back, and rispondere per le rime is giving as good as you get. In formal language, rispondere di means being responsible for: il proprietario non risponde degli oggetti smarriti. The noun is la risposta.

Rispondere takes avere: ho risposto, avevano risposto. Since the person is an indirect object, the participle does not agree with gli or le: le ho risposto ieri, gli abbiamo risposto subito.

Rispondere in context

  • Presente: Perché non rispondi mai al telefono? (Why do you never answer the phone?)
(The professor answered all our questions.)
(I wrote to her every week, but she didn't reply.)
(She said no and closed the door.)
  • Futuro Semplice: Vi risponderemo entro tre giorni lavorativi. (We'll reply to you within three working days.)
(I'm waiting for her to reply before booking the hotel.)

Common expressions with rispondere

  • rispondere male: to answer back, to be rude. Non rispondere male a tua nonna!
  • rispondere per le rime: to give tit for tat, to fire back
  • rispondere di qualcosa: to be responsible for something
  • non risponde: there's no answer. Said when you call and nobody picks up.

Common mistakes

(Answer the question, please.). The thing or person you answer is introduced by a, often merged with the article: alla domanda, al telefono.
(I wrote to Marco, but he didn't reply to me.). The person answered is an indirect object, so the pronouns are mi, ti, gli, le, not lo or la.
