Ridere means “to laugh.” Its participle is riso, spelled exactly like the word for rice, and its passato remoto has risi, rise and risero.
Infinitive
ridere
English
to laugh
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
riso
Gerund
ridendo
Irregular past participle: riso, in all compound tenses (ho riso, avevamo riso). The passato remoto is strong in three persons, risi, rise, risero, and regular in the others: ridesti, ridemmo, rideste. Everything else is regular -ERE: rido, ridevo, riderò, che rida, ridendo. Context tells you whether riso means laughed or rice. Sorridere and deridere (to mock) follow the same pattern: sorriso, deriso.
Ridere is laughing out loud or finding something funny: ridiamo sempre insieme, non c'è niente da ridere. Laughing at someone or something takes di: tutti ridono di lui. Far ridere means to be funny or to make someone laugh: quel comico mi fa ridere, and with irony, non farmi ridere means “don't make me laugh, that's absurd.” Sorridere, built on ridere, means to smile, and its participle is sorriso, which is also the noun for a smile. The noun for a laugh is la risata, and a fit of giggles is la ridarella.
Ridere takes avere: abbiamo riso tanto, avevano riso tutta la sera. The participle does not change, because ridere has no direct object: anche le ragazze hanno riso.
