Decidere means “to decide.” Its participle deciso and passato remoto decisi are irregular, and before an infinitive it takes di: ho deciso di partire.
Infinitive
decidere
English
to decide
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
deciso
Gerund
decidendo
Irregular past participle: deciso, used in every compound tense. The passato remoto is strong in three persons: decisi, decise, decisero, and regular in the rest: decidesti, decidemmo. All other tenses follow regular -ERE: decido, decidevo, deciderò, che decida. Verbs ending in -dere often share this -so participle: ridere (riso), uccidere (ucciso), dividere (diviso).
Decidere is used with a direct object (decidere la data, decidere il menù), with di plus an infinitive (abbiamo deciso di vendere la casa) and with a question word (devo decidere dove andare, non hanno ancora deciso chi invitare). Decidi tu! is the classic way to let someone else choose. The pronominal decidersi means finally making up your mind, often after hesitating, and takes a: si è deciso a chiamarla. The adjective deciso means determined or firm, as in un tono deciso, and the noun is la decisione, which Italians prendono (take): ho preso una decisione.
Decidere takes avere: ho deciso, avevamo deciso. A preceding direct object pronoun makes the participle agree: la data l'hanno decisa ieri. Decidersi takes essere: finalmente mi sono decisa.
