Chiudere means “to close” or “to shut.” It is the opposite of aprire, it has the irregular participle chiuso, and you will see it on every shop door that says chiuso.
Infinitive
chiudere
English
to close, to shut
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
chiuso
Gerund
chiudendo
Irregular past participle: chiuso, so the compound tenses are ho chiuso, avevo chiuso, avrei chiuso. The passato remoto is strong in chiusi, chiuse and chiusero, and regular in chiudesti, chiudemmo, chiudeste. Everything else is regular -ERE: chiudo, chiudevo, chiuderò, chiuderei, che io chiuda. The compounds racchiudere (to contain), socchiudere (to half-close) and rinchiudere (to lock up) follow the same model.
Chiudere works with doors, windows, eyes, shops, accounts and conversations: chiudi la porta, chiudo gli occhi, la banca chiude alle quattro, abbiamo chiuso il conto. It also means switching off or turning off a tap or the gas: chiudi l'acqua, hai chiuso il gas? Without an object it describes opening hours: a che ora chiudete? Chiudere a chiave is locking. Chiudere con qualcuno means ending a relationship: ho chiuso con lui. The participle chiuso is also an adjective for people who are reserved: è un ragazzo un po' chiuso.
Chiudere takes avere, both with an object and in sentences about opening hours: ho chiuso la finestra, il negozio ha chiuso alle otto. A direct object pronoun before the verb triggers agreement: la porta? L'ho chiusa io. The pronominal chiudersi takes essere: la porta si è chiusa da sola, si è chiuso in camera.

Ieri il museo ha chiuso alle sei., not Ieri il museo è chiuso alle sei. (The museum closed at six yesterday.). For the action of closing, the passato prossimo uses avere. È chiuso, with chiuso as an adjective, only describes the present state: “it is closed.”
Chiuso. It is irregular and also works as an adjective: la porta è chiusa, i negozi sono chiusi la domenica.
Does chiudere take essere or avere?
Avere: ho chiuso, hanno chiuso. When you see è chiuso, it is usually the adjective describing a state, not a compound tense. The reflexive chiudersi takes essere: la porta si è chiusa.
Is chiudere irregular?
Partly. The participle chiuso and the passato remoto chiusi, chiuse, chiusero are irregular. All other tenses are regular -ERE forms.
