Vendere means “to sell.” It is a regular -ERE verb, and the related phrase in vendita (for sale) is one learners often confuse with “on sale.”
Infinitive
vendere
English
to sell
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
venduto
Gerund
vendendo
Regular -ERE verb on the stem vend-: vendo, vendi, vende, vendiamo, vendete, vendono. The participle is venduto. The passato remoto in the tables uses vendetti, vendette, vendettero; vendei, vendé and venderono are also correct. The future and conditional keep the e: venderò, venderei.
Vendere works much as in English: vendere la casa, vendere online, questo libro vende bene. The buyer is introduced by a and the price by per or a: l'ho venduta a un collega per tremila euro. A sign reading vendesi means “for sale,” and affittasi means “for rent.” Figurative uses are common too: vendere fumo is selling empty promises, and someone who sells out their principles si vende. The person who sells is il venditore, and the sale is la vendita.
Vendere takes avere: ho venduto, avevano venduto. With a direct object pronoun before the verb, the participle agrees with it: la macchina l'ho venduta, i biglietti li abbiamo venduti tutti.

Common mistakes
Le scarpe sono in saldo al 50%., not Le scarpe sono in vendita al 50%. (The shoes are on sale at 50% off.). In vendita means available to buy. For a discount, Italian says in saldo or in offerta.
La bici? L'ho venduta ieri., not La bici? L'ho venduto ieri. (The bike? I sold it yesterday.). L' replaces la bici, which is feminine, so the participle agrees: venduta.
