Ricevere means “to receive” or “to get,” for messages, parcels, visitors and prizes. It is a regular -ERE verb whose passato remoto has two accepted sets of forms.
Infinitive
ricevere
English
to receive
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
ricevuto
Gerund
ricevendo
Regular -ERE verb on the stem ricev-: ricevo, ricevi, riceve, riceviamo, ricevete, ricevono. The participle is ricevuto. The passato remoto in the tables is ricevetti, ricevé, ricevettero, and the alternatives ricevei, ricevette, riceverono are equally correct. The future and conditional keep the e: riceverò, riceverei.
Ricevere is the standard verb for things that reach you: ricevere una lettera, una telefonata, un regalo, una multa. In conversation, arrivare is often used instead, with the thing as the subject: mi è arrivato il pacco. Ricevere also means welcoming or seeing people: riceviamo gli ospiti in giardino, il dottore riceve il lunedì. The participle has become two everyday words: la ricevuta, the receipt you ask for in a shop, and ricevuto!, the radio reply that Italians also use for “got it.”
Ricevere takes avere: ho ricevuto, avevamo ricevuto. With a direct object pronoun before the verb, the participle agrees: le tue email le ho ricevute tutte. Without a preceding pronoun it stays ricevuto: ho ricevuto due cartoline.

Common mistakes
Ho ricevuto la lettera stamattina., not Ho ricevuta la lettera stamattina. (I got the letter this morning.). With avere, the participle only agrees with a direct object pronoun that comes before it, not with a noun after it.
La lettera? L'ho ricevuta ieri., not La lettera? L'ho ricevuto ieri. (The letter? I got it yesterday.). Here l' stands for la lettera, so the participle becomes feminine: ricevuta.
Ricevuto, with the regular -ERE ending -uto. The feminine ricevuta is also a noun meaning receipt.
Is ricevere irregular?
No. It is a regular -ERE verb. The only variation is in the passato remoto, where Italian accepts two sets of endings, ricevetti or ricevei for io, ricevette or ricevé for lui and lei.
