Scegliere Conjugation

Scegliere means “to choose” or “to pick.” Its stem moves between gli and lg, so it is one of the irregular verbs that learners most often conjugate wrongly.

Infinitive
scegliere
English
to choose
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
scelto
Gerund
scegliendo

Irregular -ERE verb with a gli/lg stem swap. Before the endings -o and -a the stem becomes scelg-: io scelgo, loro scelgono, che io scelga, che loro scelgano. Everywhere else it keeps scegli-: scegli, sceglie, scegliamo, scegliete, sceglievo, sceglierò, sceglierei. The passato remoto is scelsi, scelse, scelsero beside regular scegliesti, scegliemmo, sceglieste, and the participle is scelto. Raccogliere, cogliere and togliere work the same way: raccolgo, colto, tolgo.

How scegliere works

Scegliere takes a direct object: scegli un numero, abbiamo scelto il vino, ha scelto medicina all'università. Choosing between options uses tra or fra: scegliere tra due offerte. To choose to do something, add di and an infinitive: ho scelto di restare. In a restaurant the waiter may ask avete scelto? (“have you decided?”), and on menus and websites you will often see the noun la scelta, as in a scelta (“of your choice”). The adjective scelto means “select” or “chosen”: vini scelti.

Scegliere takes avere: ho scelto, hanno scelto bene. The participle agrees with a direct object pronoun that precedes it: quale maglietta? L'ho scelta rossa; i regali li abbiamo scelti insieme.

Scegliere in context

  • Presente: Di solito scelgo il posto vicino al finestrino. (I usually choose the window seat.)
  • Presente: Tra mare e montagna, quale scegli? (Between the sea and the mountains, which do you choose?)
  • Passato Prossimo: Avete già scelto cosa ordinare? (Have you already decided what to order?)
  • Passato Remoto: Alla fine scelse di vivere in campagna. (In the end he chose to live in the countryside.)
  • Futuro Semplice: Sceglieremo l'albergo quando sapremo le date. (We'll pick the hotel once we know the dates.)
  • Congiuntivo Presente: Lascia che i bambini scelgano il film di stasera. (Let the children choose tonight's film.)
  • Imperativo: Scegli tu, per me va bene tutto. (You choose, anything is fine with me.)

Common expressions with scegliere

  • avere l'imbarazzo della scelta: to be spoilt for choice
  • scegliere a caso: to pick at random
  • a scelta: of your choice. Primo a scelta, “a first course of your choice,” on a fixed menu.
  • scegliere il male minore: to choose the lesser evil

Common mistakes

  • Io scelgo la pizza., not Io sceglio la pizza. (I'm choosing the pizza.). Before -o and -a the stem changes to scelg-. Sceglio does not exist; the io form is scelgo, the loro form scelgono.
  • Ho scelto un regalo per te., not Ho sceglito un regalo per te. (I've chosen a present for you.). The past participle is irregular: scelto. The compound tenses all use it: avevo scelto, avrò scelto.

Frequently asked questions

Is scegliere irregular?
Yes. The present has scelgo and scelgono, the subjunctive scelga and scelgano, the passato remoto scelsi, scelse, scelsero, and the participle is scelto. The imperfect, future and conditional are regular: sceglievo, sceglierò, sceglierei.
What is the past participle of scegliere?
Scelto. With avere it does not change for the subject (Maria ha scelto), but it agrees with a preceding direct object pronoun: le ho scelte.
Does scegliere take essere or avere?
Avere: ho scelto, avevamo scelto. Scegliere always has something chosen, even if it is only implied, so essere is never used.
How do you pronounce scegliere?
SHEH-lyeh-reh. Sc before e sounds like English sh, and gli sounds roughly like the lli in “million.” In scelgo the l and g are pronounced separately: SHEL-go.
