How restare works

Restare is staying in a place (resto a casa stasera, è restata a Londra dopo gli studi), staying in a condition (restare calmo, restare in contatto) and being left over (mi restano venti euro, è restata solo una fetta di torta). With an indirect pronoun it is the natural way to say how much of something you have left: ci restano due giorni di vacanza. Restare male means being hurt or disappointed by something: c'è restato male quando non l'hai invitato. Restare and rimanere are almost always interchangeable, and many speakers prefer restare simply because it is regular. Do not confuse it with the English “rest,” which in Italian is riposarsi.

Restare takes essere, so the participle agrees with the subject: Giorgio è restato a cena, Elena è restata sola, siamo restati senza benzina, le valigie sono restate in aeroporto.

Restare in context

  • Presente: Stasera resto a casa, sono stanco morto. (I'm staying home tonight, I'm dead tired.)
  • Passato Prossimo: Siamo restati a Lisbona una settimana in più. (We stayed in Lisbon an extra week.)
  • Imperfetto: Il bambino restava in silenzio mentre gli adulti parlavano. (The child stayed silent while the adults talked.)
  • Futuro Semplice: Resterò in ufficio finché non finisco il progetto. (I'll stay at the office until I finish the project.)
  • Congiuntivo Presente: Vuoi che resti con te stanotte? (Do you want me to stay with you tonight?)
  • Condizionale Presente: Resterei volentieri, ma domani mi alzo presto. (I'd happily stay, but I'm getting up early tomorrow.)

Common expressions with restare

  • restarci male: to be hurt, to be let down. Ci sono restata male per quello che ha detto.
  • restare a bocca aperta: to be left open-mouthed, to be amazed
  • restare di sasso: to be stunned. Literally “to remain like a stone.”
  • restare senza: to run out of. Siamo restati senza latte.

Common mistakes

  • Sono restato a casa tutto il giorno., not Ho restato a casa tutto il giorno. (I stayed home all day.). Restare takes essere, and the participle agrees: sono restata for a woman.
  • Sono stanco, devo riposarmi un po'., not Sono stanco, devo restare un po'. (I'm tired, I need to rest for a bit.). Restare means to stay, not to rest. Resting is riposarsi.

Frequently asked questions

Does restare take essere or avere?
Essere: sono restato, è restata, sono restati. The participle agrees with the subject.
What is the difference between restare and rimanere?
In meaning they are practically identical: resto a casa and rimango a casa say the same thing. The difference is in the grammar, because rimanere is irregular (rimango, rimasto) and restare is regular.
How do you say “I have ... left” in Italian?
Use restare or rimanere with an indirect pronoun, and make the thing left the subject: mi resta un'ora, ci restano tre uova. The verb agrees with what is left, not with the person.
