Lavorare means “to work,” both in the sense of having a job and of putting effort into something. It is completely regular, so its table is a clean model of the -ARE endings you will reuse for hundreds of other verbs.
Infinitive
lavorare
English
to work
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
lavorato
Gerund
lavorando
Regular -ARE verb: drop -are and add the standard endings (lavoro, lavori, lavora, lavoriamo, lavorate, lavorano). No form is irregular. The one detail to watch is the future and conditional, where the a of the infinitive becomes e: lavorerò, lavorerai, lavorerei, never lavorarò. In the present the stress stays on the vo syllable in every form except noi and voi: la-VO-ro, la-VO-ra-no, but la-vo-RIA-mo.
Most of the time lavorare has no object and talks about your job. The small word after it changes the meaning: lavoro come cuoco names your role, lavoro in banca or lavoro presso uno studio legale names the place, lavoro per una ditta tedesca names the employer, and sto lavorando a un romanzo names the project. Used with an object, lavorare means to work a material by hand: lavorare il legno, lavorare la terra, lavorare l'impasto (to knead the dough). Note that lavoro is both “I work” and the noun “job, work,” so cerco lavoro means “I am looking for a job.”
Lavorare takes avere in every use, including when it has no object: ho lavorato, abbiamo lavorato tutta la notte. The participle lavorato does not change, unless a direct object pronoun comes before it: questa terra l'hanno lavorata i miei nonni.

Common mistakes
Lavoro come insegnante., not Lavoro come un insegnante. (I work as a teacher.). After come, a profession has no article. With un it means “I work like a teacher,” a comparison. You can also say faccio l'insegnante, which does use the article.
La lavatrice non funziona più., not La lavatrice non lavora più. (The washing machine doesn't work anymore.). For machines, devices and plans that work or fail, Italian uses funzionare. Lavorare is for people (and animals) doing work.
Avere, always: ho lavorato, hai lavorato, hanno lavorato. Lavorare often has no object, but it is not a verb of motion or change of state, so it does not take essere.
Is lavorare a regular verb?
Yes. Every form follows the regular -ARE pattern, and the past participle is lavorato. The only change to remember is the e in the future and conditional stem: lavorerò, lavorerei.
How do you say what job you do with lavorare?
Use lavoro come plus the profession with no article: lavoro come avvocato. To name the place, use in or presso: lavoro in un ristorante, lavoro presso il Comune. Italians also often use fare with the article: faccio l'avvocato, fa la commessa.
What is the difference between lavorare and funzionare?
Lavorare means a person does work. Funzionare means a thing works, in the sense of operating or being effective: il telefono non funziona, il tuo piano funziona. English uses “work” for both, which is why learners often say la macchina non lavora by mistake.
