Insegnare means “to teach.” What you teach is the direct object and the person you teach takes a: insegno l'italiano agli stranieri.
Infinitive
insegnare
English
to teach
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
insegnato
Gerund
insegnando
Regular -ARE verb on the stem insegn-: insegno, insegni, insegna, insegniamo, insegnate, insegnano. The noi form is written insegniamo, with the i of the -iamo ending, even though it adds no sound after gn. The same goes for che insegniate. The future and conditional change a to e: insegnerò, insegnerei.
Insegnare is used for teaching a subject (insegna storia al liceo), a skill (mi ha insegnato a nuotare) or a lesson in life (l'esperienza mi ha insegnato molto). The learner is an indirect object, so the pronouns are mi, ti, gli and le: le insegno a guidare. To teach someone to do something, use a plus an infinitive. The job title is l'insegnante, used for both men and women, while la maestra or il maestro teaches primary school and il professore or la professoressa teaches secondary school or university. Its partner is imparare, to learn: the teacher insegna and the student impara.
Insegnare takes avere: ho insegnato, avevano insegnato. The learner is an indirect object, so there is no agreement with gli or le: alle mie figlie ho insegnato a cucinare. A preceding direct object does cause agreement: queste canzoni ce le ha insegnate la nonna.
