Diventare means “to become,” and it also translates “to get,” “to go” and “to turn” when they describe a change. It is regular and takes essere, so its participle agrees with the subject.
Infinitive
diventare
English
to become
Auxiliary
essere
Past participle
diventato
Gerund
diventando
Regular -ARE verb on the stem divent-: divento, diventi, diventa, diventiamo, diventate, diventano. The future and conditional change a to e: diventerò, diventerei. The stress is on -ven- in the singular, divènto. Nothing is irregular, unlike its literary twin divenire, which follows venire.
Diventare links a subject to what it turns into: a profession (è diventato medico), an adjective (sono diventata nonna, il cielo diventa scuro) or a noun phrase (Roma è diventata la capitale nel 1871). English often uses get, go or turn for the same idea, and Italian uses diventare for all of them: diventare vecchio (to get old), diventare matto (to go mad), diventare rosso (to turn red, to blush). Diventare grande means growing up. With professions Italians usually leave out the article (vuole diventare avvocato), but they add it when there is an adjective: è diventato un bravo cuoco. The literary synonym is divenire.
Diventare takes essere, so the participle agrees in gender and number with the subject: Luca è diventato papà, Sofia è diventata famosa, i prezzi sono diventati assurdi, le giornate sono diventate più corte.
