How chiamarsi works
Literally, mi chiamo Luca means “I call myself Luca.” Italians use it for people, pets, places and things: come si chiama tuo fratello?, il mio cane si chiama Pippo, come si chiama questo in italiano? The formal question is come si chiama?, the informal one come ti chiami?, and for several people come vi chiamate? In the past, chiamarsi is common for names that have changed or for things you cannot remember: come si chiamava quel ristorante? A related noun is il nome, so mi chiamo Anna and il mio nome è Anna both work, but the verb is far more natural.
Chiamarsi takes essere in compound tenses, and the participle agrees with the subject: si è sempre chiamato Marco, la piazza si è chiamata così fino al 1946, ci siamo chiamati come i nonni. The non-reflexive chiamare takes avere: ho chiamato un taxi.
The pronoun changes with the subject and is part of every form: mi chiamo, ti chiamavi, si chiamerà, ci eravamo chiamati, vi chiamereste. With conjugated verbs it comes first. With the infinitive it is attached and matches the subject: vorrei chiamarmi in un altro modo, or with the modal first, mi vorrei chiamare. The imperative is rare with this verb, but the forms follow the usual rule: chiamati, chiamiamoci, chiamatevi, and si chiami for Lei. The gerund attaches the pronoun too: chiamandosi, or chiamandomi with io. Compound tenses use essere with agreement: si è chiamata, vi siete chiamati. The base verb chiamare, without a pronoun, means “to call” someone or “to name” them: abbiamo chiamato nostra figlia Sofia. In that sentence the parents give the name, while in nostra figlia si chiama Sofia the name is simply stated.

Common mistakes
- Mi chiamo Paolo., not Il mio nome si chiama Paolo. (My name is Paolo.). The subject of chiamarsi is the person, not the name. Say mi chiamo Paolo or il mio nome è Paolo, but not both together.
- Come ti chiami?, not Come chiami? (What's your name?). Without ti, the question means “how do you call (someone)?” The reflexive pronoun is what turns chiamare into “to be called.”
- Mia nonna si chiamava Rosa., not Mia nonna si è chiamato Rosa. (My grandmother's name was Rosa.). A name is a lasting state, so the imperfect is the normal past tense. And with essere the participle would have to agree: si è chiamata.
