Addormentarsi means “to fall asleep” or “to go to sleep.” It names the moment you drop off, which is different from dormire, the state of sleeping.
Infinitive
addormentarsi
English
to fall asleep
Auxiliary
essere
Past participle
addormentato
Gerund
addormentandosi
Reflexive -ARSI verb on the regular -ARE stem addorment-: mi addormento, ti addormenti, si addormenta, ci addormentiamo, vi addormentate, si addormentano. Stress falls on men in the singular and in si addormentano (mi ad-dor-MEN-to). The future and conditional turn the a of the ending into e: mi addormenterò, si addormenterebbe. Present subjunctive: che io mi addormenti, che loro si addormentino. All forms are regular.
Addormentarsi is the change from awake to asleep: mi addormento sempre davanti alla TV, il bambino si è addormentato in macchina. It is often used with phrases of time and difficulty: non riesco ad addormentarmi, ci ho messo un'ora ad addormentarmi. A limb that goes numb can also addormentarsi: mi si è addormentata la gamba (“my leg has gone to sleep”). The base verb addormentare means putting someone to sleep: addormentare un bambino, and in medicine, anaesthetising a patient. The opposite of addormentarsi is svegliarsi.
Addormentarsi takes essere in compound tenses and the participle agrees with the subject: mi sono addormentato, la nonna si è addormentata sul divano, ci siamo addormentati tardi. The base verb addormentare takes avere: la musica lo ha addormentato.
The pronoun matches the subject in every tense: mi addormento, ti addormentavi, si addormenterà, ci eravamo addormentati, vi addormentereste. It precedes conjugated forms. With an infinitive it is attached and still agrees with the subject: faccio fatica ad addormentarmi, prova ad addormentarti, or with a modal in front, non mi posso addormentare adesso. Affirmative commands attach it to tu, noi and voi (addormentati, addormentiamoci, addormentatevi) and place it before Lei (si addormenti). For a negative tu command you can say non addormentarti or non ti addormentare, as in non addormentarti al volante. The gerund attaches it too: addormentandosi, addormentandomi. Compound tenses use essere with agreement: si è addormentata, vi siete addormentati. Without the pronoun, addormentare is transitive and means making someone fall asleep: la ninna nanna addormenta il bambino, il chirurgo ha fatto addormentare il paziente.

Common mistakes
Mi sono addormentato alle due., not Ho addormentato alle due. (I fell asleep at two.). Falling asleep yourself needs the reflexive form with essere. Ho addormentato would mean you put someone else to sleep.
Ieri mi sono addormentato alle undici., not Ieri ho dormito alle undici. (Yesterday I fell asleep at eleven.). Dormire is the state of sleeping, so it goes with durations: ho dormito otto ore. The moment you drop off is addormentarsi.
What is the difference between addormentarsi and dormire?
Addormentarsi is the moment of falling asleep: mi addormento a mezzanotte. Dormire is being asleep over time: dormo fino alle otto. The two often appear together: mi sono addormentato tardi, quindi ho dormito poco.
Does addormentarsi take essere or avere?
Essere: mi sono addormentata, si sono addormentati. The non-reflexive addormentare, which has an object, takes avere: ha addormentato il cane.
How do you say “I can't fall asleep” in Italian?
Non riesco ad addormentarmi, or non riesco a prendere sonno. Note the d in ad before the vowel of addormentarmi.
Is addormentarsi irregular?
No. It follows the regular -ARE pattern with a reflexive pronoun, just like svegliarsi, its opposite.
