How aspettare works

Aspettare is the verb of queues, stations and late friends: ti aspetto sotto casa, aspettiamo il nostro turno, scusa se ti ho fatto aspettare. The short imperatives aspetta! and aspetti! (formal) are how Italians say “wait!” or “hold on.” To wait until something happens, use aspettare che with the subjunctive: aspetto che tu sia pronto. Aspettare un bambino means to be expecting a baby. With a reflexive pronoun, aspettarsi means “to expect”: non me l'aspettavo means “I didn't see that coming.”

Aspettare takes avere: ho aspettato, avevano aspettato. With a direct object pronoun before the verb, the participle agrees with it: le tue cugine le ho aspettate un'ora. Aspettarsi, the reflexive form meaning to expect, takes essere: non mi sarei mai aspettato una cosa simile.

Aspettare in context

  • Presente: Ti aspetto davanti alla stazione alle otto. (I'll wait for you in front of the station at eight.)
  • Passato Prossimo: Abbiamo aspettato il treno per quaranta minuti. (We waited forty minutes for the train.)
  • Imperfetto: Mentre aspettavo il dottore, ho letto una rivista. (While I was waiting for the doctor, I read a magazine.)
  • Futuro Semplice: Vi aspetteremo per cena, non fate tardi. (We'll expect you for dinner, don't be late.)
  • Condizionale Presente: Al posto tuo aspetterei la risposta del medico. (In your place I'd wait for the doctor's answer.)
  • Imperativo: Aspetta un attimo, prendo le chiavi. (Wait a second, I'll get the keys.)

Common expressions with aspettare

  • aspettare un bambino: to be expecting a baby. Laura aspetta un bambino per marzo.
  • aspettarsi qualcosa: to expect something. Cosa ti aspettavi? (what did you expect?)
  • fare aspettare qualcuno: to keep someone waiting
  • aspetta e spera: dream on. An ironic reply when something is unlikely to happen.

Common mistakes

  • Aspetto l'autobus., not Aspetto per l'autobus. (I'm waiting for the bus.). Aspettare is transitive. The English “for” has no equivalent here, so the object follows the verb directly.
  • Non mi aspettavo questa notizia., not Non ho aspettato questa notizia. (I didn't expect this news.). When you mean “expect,” use the reflexive aspettarsi. Plain aspettare is waiting.
