Aiutare means “to help.” It takes a direct object, so the person you help comes straight after the verb, and the task is introduced by a: aiuto mia madre a cucinare.
Infinitive
aiutare
English
to help
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
aiutato
Gerund
aiutando
Regular -ARE verb with the stem aiut-: aiuto, aiuti, aiuta, aiutiamo, aiutate, aiutano. The first syllable sounds like “eye-you,” and the stem never changes. The future and conditional turn the a of the infinitive into e: aiuterò, aiuterei. There are no irregular forms.
Aiutare is the verb for helping a person, an animal or a cause: aiutare un amico, aiutare i più deboli, aiutare l'economia. The most useful request is mi aiuti? or, more politely, mi può aiutare?, and the cry for help on its own is the noun aiuto! When you name the task, use a plus an infinitive (ci aiutate a spostare il divano?) or con plus a noun (mi aiuti con i compiti?). In conversation Italians often say dare una mano instead: mi dai una mano? With a reciprocal pronoun, aiutarsi means helping each other: tra vicini ci si aiuta.
Aiutare takes avere: ho aiutato, avevamo aiutato. Because the person helped is a direct object, a direct object pronoun before the verb makes the participle agree: Giulia? L'ho aiutata ieri, le mie sorelle le ho aiutate a traslocare.

Common mistakes
Aiuto mia sorella con l'inglese., not Aiuto a mia sorella con l'inglese. (I help my sister with English.). Aiutare takes a direct object, so there is no a before the person. The pronouns are direct too: la aiuto, not le aiuto.
Mi aiuti a fare la valigia?, not Mi aiuti fare la valigia? (Will you help me pack?). When aiutare is followed by an infinitive, the preposition a is required.
Avere: ho aiutato, hai aiutato, hanno aiutato. The reciprocal aiutarsi takes essere: ci siamo aiutati molto.
Is it aiutare qualcuno or aiutare a qualcuno?
Aiutare qualcuno. The person is a direct object: aiuto Marco, lo aiuto. The preposition a only introduces the action: aiuto Marco a studiare.
What is the difference between aiutare and dare una mano?
They mean the same thing. Dare una mano (to lend a hand) is more casual and very common in speech, and the person takes a because it is an indirect object: dai una mano a Luca? Aiutare is neutral and works in every register.
