Costruire means “to build” or “to construct,” literally and figuratively. It belongs to the -ISC group, so it says costruisco but costruiamo.
Infinitive
costruire
English
to build
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
costruito
Gerund
costruendo
-ISC verb: adds -isc- between the stem and the ending in the singular and the third person plural of the present: costruisco, costruisci, costruisce, costruiscono. Noi and voi have no -isc-: costruiamo, costruite. The present subjunctive and the imperative follow the same split: che costruisca, che costruiscano, but costruiamo, costruiate. The participle costruito and the passato remoto costruii, costruì are regular -IRE.
Costruire is used for buildings, roads and objects (costruire una casa, un ponte, un modellino) and for anything built up over time: costruire una carriera, un rapporto di fiducia, un futuro insieme. In grammar it also means constructing a sentence: questa frase è costruita male. The noun la costruzione covers both a construction site and the structure of a sentence, and un'impresa di costruzioni is a building firm. As an adjective, costruito can describe behaviour that seems artificial or staged: un sorriso costruito.
Costruire takes avere: ho costruito, avevano costruito. With a preceding direct object pronoun the participle agrees: quella villa l'ha costruita un architetto famoso. In the passive, essere is used: la chiesa è stata costruita nel Seicento.

Common mistakes
Costruisco un mobile per la cucina., not Costruo un mobile per la cucina. (I'm building a cabinet for the kitchen.). Costruire is an -ISC verb, so the io form adds -isc-: costruisco.
Noi costruiamo una casetta per gli uccelli., not Noi costruiscamo una casetta per gli uccelli. (We're building a birdhouse.). Noi and voi never take -isc- in the present: costruiamo, costruite.
Avere: ho costruito, abbiamo costruito. Essere only appears in the passive: il ponte è stato costruito nel 1950.
Is costruire irregular?
No. It is a regular -ISC verb, like capire and finire. The -isc- infix is a regular pattern, and the participle costruito follows the normal -IRE ending.
Why is it costruisco but costruiamo?
-ISC verbs insert -isc- only where the stress would otherwise fall on the stem: io, tu, lui and lei, and loro. In noi and voi the stress is on the ending, so the infix is not needed.
