Spiegare Conjugation

Spiegare means “to explain.” It is a -gare verb, so an h appears in forms like spieghi and spiegherò, and it is the verb behind the learner's favourite request: me lo spieghi?

Infinitive
spiegare
English
to explain
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
spiegato
Gerund
spiegando

-gare verb: an h is inserted after g before e and i, so the g stays hard as in spiego. The present has spieghi and spieghiamo next to spiego, spiega, spiegate, spiegano. The future and conditional are spiegherò and spiegherei throughout. In the present subjunctive and the polite imperative the h appears too: che io spieghi, che loro spieghino, mi spieghi, per favore. The imperfect spiegavo, the passato remoto spiegai, spiegò, and the participle spiegato need no h.

How spiegare works

Spiegare takes the thing explained as a direct object and the person as an indirect object with a: il professore spiega la regola agli studenti, mi spieghi come funziona? With pronouns, the two combine: me lo spieghi?, glielo spiego io, ce l'ha spiegato ieri. Spiegarsi means making yourself clear (mi sono spiegato?, “do you see what I mean?”) and also understanding something you could not explain before: non mi spiego come sia successo. The original meaning, still alive, is unfolding or spreading out: spiegare una cartina, spiegare le vele.

Spiegare takes avere: ho spiegato, avevamo spiegato tutto. A preceding direct object pronoun makes the participle agree: la situazione? L'ho spiegata al direttore; le regole gliele abbiamo spiegate. Spiegarsi takes essere: forse non mi sono spiegata bene.

Spiegare in context

  • Presente: Mi spieghi come si arriva al castello? (Can you explain how to get to the castle?)
  • Presente: Questa guida spiega la storia di ogni quadro. (This guide explains the history of each painting.)
  • Passato Prossimo: Il medico mi ha spiegato bene come prendere le medicine. (The doctor explained clearly how to take the medicine.)
  • Imperfetto: Mentre la professoressa spiegava, nessuno prendeva appunti. (While the teacher was explaining, nobody was taking notes.)
  • Futuro Semplice: Vieni stasera e ti spiegherò tutto. (Come tonight and I'll explain everything.)
  • Congiuntivo Presente: Preferisco che ce lo spieghi tu, sei più paziente. (I'd rather you explained it to us, you're more patient.)
  • Condizionale Presente: Glielo spiegherei volentieri, ma adesso devo scappare. (I'd happily explain it to you, but I have to rush off now.)

Common expressions with spiegare

  • mi sono spiegato?: do I make myself clear?. It can sound firm or even stern, depending on the tone.
  • non me lo spiego: I can't understand it, it's beyond me
  • spiegare per filo e per segno: to explain in great detail
  • spiegare le vele: to set sail. From the older meaning “to unfold.”

Common mistakes

  • Puoi spiegarmi?, not Puoi spiegarmi a me? (Can you explain to me?). Mi already means “to me.” Using both mi and a me repeats the same person; keep a me only for emphasis, without the pronoun: puoi spiegare a me?
  • Ti spiegherò domani., not Ti spiegerò domani. (I'll explain it to you tomorrow.). Spiegare keeps a hard g, so the future has an h: spiegherò. Without it, spiegerò would be pronounced with a soft g.

Frequently asked questions

Does spiegare take essere or avere?
Avere: ho spiegato, hanno spiegato. Spiegarsi, meaning “to make yourself understood,” takes essere: mi sono spiegato male.
Why is it spieghi and not spiegi?
Spiegare is a -gare verb. Italian adds an h before e and i to keep the hard g of spiego in every form: spieghi, spieghiamo, spiegherò.
Is spiegare irregular?
No. It is a regular -ARE verb; only the spelling adds an h. The pronunciation of the g never changes.
How do you say “can you explain it to me?” in Italian?
Me lo spieghi? to a friend, or me lo può spiegare? in the formal Lei form. Mi and lo combine as me lo.
