Dimenticare means “to forget.” It is a -care verb with a spelling change, and it has a pronominal twin, dimenticarsi di, that Italians use just as often.
Infinitive
dimenticare
English
to forget
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
dimenticato
Gerund
dimenticando
-care verb: the c of dimentic- stays hard because an h is written before e and i. Present: dimentico, dimentichi, dimentica, dimentichiamo, dimenticate, dimenticano. The whole future and conditional have the h (dimenticherò, dimenticherei), as do the present subjunctive (che io dimentichi, che loro dimentichino) and the imperatives dimentichi and dimentichino. The stress is on the second syllable in the singular and in dimenticano: di-MEN-ti-co. All endings are regular.
Dimenticare takes a direct object: ho dimenticato le chiavi, non dimenticare il passaporto, ho dimenticato il suo nome. To forget to do something, add di and an infinitive: ho dimenticato di chiamarti. Dimenticarsi is the pronominal version, and it puts di before a noun: mi sono dimenticato le chiavi or mi sono dimenticato delle chiavi, mi sono dimenticata di te. Both forms are correct and mean the same thing, though dimenticarsi is more common in speech. When you leave something behind in a place, Italians often say ho lasciato or ho dimenticato: ho dimenticato l'ombrello in treno.
Dimenticare takes avere: ho dimenticato, avevamo dimenticato. The participle agrees with a preceding direct object pronoun: la password? L'ho dimenticata di nuovo. The pronominal dimenticarsi takes essere, with agreement with the subject: mi sono dimenticata, ci siamo dimenticati del compleanno.

Common mistakes
Mi sono dimenticato di chiamare Paolo., not Mi sono dimenticato chiamare Paolo. (I forgot to call Paolo.). Before an infinitive, both dimenticare and dimenticarsi need di.
Ho dimenticato la riunione., not Ho dimenticato della riunione. (I forgot about the meeting.). Dimenticare takes a direct object. Only dimenticarsi uses di before a noun, and then it contracts: mi sono dimenticato della riunione.
Non dimenticherò mai., not Non dimenticerò mai. (I'll never forget.). The future keeps the hard c with an h: dimenticherò.
What is the difference between dimenticare and dimenticarsi?
They mean the same. Dimenticare takes a direct object (ho dimenticato le chiavi); dimenticarsi can take one too, or di plus a noun (mi sono dimenticato delle chiavi). Dimenticarsi is slightly more colloquial and takes essere in compound tenses.
Does dimenticare take essere or avere?
Avere: ho dimenticato. If you use the pronominal dimenticarsi, switch to essere: mi sono dimenticata, si è dimenticato.
Why does dimenticare have an h in some forms?
Dimenticare is a -care verb. Italian adds h after c before e and i so the hard k sound of the infinitive stays the same: dimentichi, dimenticherò.
Is dimenticare irregular?
No. It is regular; the h is only a spelling change. Its opposite, ricordare, is also regular.
