Offrire means “to offer,” and in daily life it very often means “to treat” or “to buy” someone a drink or a meal. Its participle is irregular: offerto.
Infinitive
offrire
English
to offer, to treat
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
offerto
Gerund
offrendo
Irregular past participle on an otherwise regular -IRE verb: the participle is offerto, so ho offerto, avevo offerto, avrei offerto. All simple tenses follow dormire with no -isc-: offro, offri, offre, offriamo, offrite, offrono, then offrivo, offrii, offrirò, offrirei, che io offra. The passato remoto is regular: offrii, offrì, offrirono. Soffrire (sofferto) and aprire (aperto) share the same type of participle.
The thing offered is the direct object and the person takes a: offro un caffè a tutti, ha offerto il suo aiuto ai vicini, le hanno offerto un lavoro. In bars and restaurants, offro io or offre la casa means someone is paying for you, and ti offro da bere is an invitation for a drink. Offrire di plus an infinitive is offering to do something: mi ha offerto di accompagnarmi. The reflexive offrirsi means volunteering: si è offerto di guidare. A shop or a hotel offre services, and l'offerta is a special offer or a bid.
Offrire takes avere: ho offerto, ci hanno offerto la cena. With a preceding direct object pronoun the participle agrees: la torta? L'ha offerta Paolo. An indirect pronoun for the person does not cause agreement: le ho offerto un passaggio. Offrirsi takes essere: mi sono offerta volontaria.
