Iniziare means “to begin” or “to start,” and it is a close synonym of cominciare. Like cominciare, it takes avere when someone starts something and essere when the thing itself starts.
Infinitive
iniziare
English
to begin, to start
Auxiliary
avere or essere
Past participle
iniziato
Gerund
iniziando
-iare verb with an unstressed i: the i of the stem merges with an ending that starts with i, so you write inizi (not inizii), iniziamo, che inizino. Unlike cominciare, which writes comincerò, iniziare keeps its i before e, because here the i is a full vowel and not just a sign for a soft c: inizierò, inizierei. Everything else is regular -ARE.
Iniziare is used for starting an activity (inizio il nuovo lavoro lunedì), starting to do something with a plus an infinitive (ha iniziato a piovere), and for events that begin (il concerto inizia alle nove). It is interchangeable with cominciare in almost every context, although iniziare can sound a little more formal and is common in official notices: le iscrizioni iniziano il 1° marzo. Iniziare qualcuno a qualcosa means initiating or introducing someone to an activity: mio zio mi ha iniziato alla pesca. The noun is l'inizio, as in all'inizio (at first).
Iniziare takes avere when a person starts something or starts doing something: ho iniziato il corso, abbiamo iniziato a mangiare. It takes essere when the event is the subject and there is no object, and the participle agrees: il film è iniziato, la scuola è iniziata, le prove sono iniziate. With weather verbs both are heard: ha iniziato a piovere, è iniziato a piovere. The tables show the avere forms.

Common mistakes
Il film è iniziato alle nove., not Il film ha iniziato alle nove. (The film started at nine.). When the event itself begins and there is no object, iniziare takes essere.
Ho iniziato a studiare l'italiano., not Ho iniziato studiare l'italiano. (I started studying Italian.). Before an infinitive, iniziare needs the preposition a.
Both. Avere when someone begins something (abbiamo iniziato la riunione) and essere when the thing begins by itself (la riunione è iniziata). In the essere case, iniziato changes to match the event: le vacanze sono iniziate.
What is the difference between iniziare and cominciare?
Almost none. They share the same constructions and auxiliaries. Cominciare is slightly more common in speech, and iniziare is slightly more frequent in formal or written Italian.
Is it inizierò or inizerò?
Inizierò. The i belongs to the stem inizi- and is pronounced, so it stays before the e of the future and conditional: inizierò, inizieresti.
