Cambiare Conjugation

Cambiare means “to change,” both changing something and becoming different. It takes avere in the first case and essere in the second, which is the key point for learners.

Infinitive
cambiare
English
to change
Auxiliary
avere or essere
Past participle
cambiato
Gerund
cambiando

-iare verb with an unstressed i: the stem cambi- merges its i with endings that begin with i, so you write cambi (not cambii), cambiamo, che cambino. The i is kept before e in the future and conditional: cambierò, cambierei. All other forms are regular -ARE: cambiavo, cambiai, cambiato.

How cambiare works

With an object, cambiare is replacing or swapping: cambiare casa (to move house), cambiare lavoro, cambiare treno a Bologna, cambiare idea (to change your mind), cambiare euro in dollari (to exchange money). Without an object, the subject itself changes: il tempo cambia, sei cambiato tanto. Cambiarsi is changing your clothes: mi cambio e arrivo. Cambiare aria is getting away for a change of scene, and the noun il cambio covers exchange rates, gear changes (il cambio automatico) and shift changes. To change channel or subject, Italians also use cambiare: cambia canale, cambiamo discorso.

Cambiare takes avere with a direct object: ho cambiato macchina, abbiamo cambiato idea. It takes essere when it means to become different, and the participle agrees with the subject: la città è cambiata molto, i miei gusti sono cambiati. Cambiarsi, for clothes, also takes essere: mi sono cambiata. The tables show the avere forms.

Cambiare in context

  • Presente: Se piove, cambiamo programma e andiamo al museo. (If it rains, we'll change plans and go to the museum.)
  • Passato Prossimo: Ho cambiato idea, prendo il pesce. (I've changed my mind, I'll have the fish.)
  • Imperfetto: Da giovane cambiavo lavoro ogni due anni. (When I was young I changed jobs every two years.)
  • Futuro Semplice: A Bologna cambierete treno per Firenze. (In Bologna you'll change trains for Florence.)
  • Congiuntivo Presente: Spero che non cambi niente tra di noi. (I hope nothing changes between us.)
  • Condizionale Presente: Non cambierei la mia città con nessun'altra. (I wouldn't swap my city for any other.)

Common expressions with cambiare

  • cambiare idea: to change your mind
  • cambiarsi: to get changed. Aspetta, mi cambio le scarpe.
  • cambiare aria: to have a change of scene
  • cambiare discorso: to change the subject

Common mistakes

  • Il quartiere è cambiato molto., not Il quartiere ha cambiato molto. (The neighbourhood has changed a lot.). When the subject itself changes and there is no object, cambiare takes essere.
  • Mi cambio prima di cena., not Cambio i miei vestiti prima di cena. (I'm getting changed before dinner.). For your own clothes, Italian uses the reflexive cambiarsi, without a possessive.

Frequently asked questions

Does cambiare take essere or avere?
Both. Avere when you change something (ho cambiato telefono) and essere when something becomes different (il tempo è cambiato). With essere, the participle agrees: Maria è cambiata.
What is the difference between cambiare and cambiarsi?
Cambiare is changing something or becoming different. Cambiarsi is changing your clothes: si è cambiato per la festa. With an object it names the item: mi cambio la camicia.
Is it cambiamo or cambiiamo?
Cambiamo, with one i. The i of the stem and the i of the -iamo ending merge. The same happens in cambiate and in the subjunctive che cambino.
