Tradurre Conjugation

Tradurre means “to translate.” It is the best-known -durre verb, which builds most of its forms on the older stem traduc- and has the irregular participle tradotto.

Infinitive
tradurre
English
to translate
Auxiliary
avere
Past participle
tradotto
Gerund
traducendo

-durre verb: the infinitive is contracted from the older traducere, so most forms use the stem traduc-: traduco, traduci, traduciamo, traducevo, che traduca, traducendo. The future and conditional are built on the short infinitive and have a double r: tradurrò, tradurrei. The participle is tradotto, and the passato remoto has tradussi, tradusse, tradussero beside traducesti, traducemmo. Produrre (prodotto), condurre (condotto), ridurre (ridotto) and introdurre (introdotto) follow the same model.

How tradurre works

Tradurre is used for texts, speech and ideas: tradurre un libro, tradurre dall'inglese all'italiano, tradurre simultaneamente. The target language takes in (tradurre in giapponese), and when you also name the source language the pair is da ... a: dal tedesco all'inglese. Figuratively, tradurre in pratica means putting something into practice, and tradursi in means resulting in: la crisi si è tradotta in un aumento dei prezzi. The person is il traduttore or la traduttrice, and the work is la traduzione. Italians like the pun traduttore, traditore (translator, traitor), a reminder that every translation loses something.

Tradurre takes avere: ho tradotto, avevano tradotto. A preceding direct object pronoun makes the participle agree: queste lettere le ha tradotte mia figlia. The pronominal tradursi (to result in) takes essere: si è tradotto in un successo.

Tradurre in context

  • Presente: Traduco manuali tecnici dal tedesco all'italiano. (I translate technical manuals from German into Italian.)
  • Passato Prossimo: Chi ha tradotto questo romanzo in inglese? (Who translated this novel into English?)
  • Imperfetto: Mentre la guida parlava, Sara traduceva per i suoi genitori. (While the guide was speaking, Sara translated for her parents.)
  • Passato Remoto: Vincenzo Monti tradusse l'Iliade in endecasillabi. (Vincenzo Monti translated the Iliad into hendecasyllables.)
  • Futuro Semplice: Tradurrò il contratto entro venerdì. (I'll translate the contract by Friday.)
  • Gerundio: Traducendo parola per parola si perde il senso della frase. (If you translate word for word, you lose the meaning of the sentence.)

Common expressions with tradurre

  • tradurre in pratica: to put into practice
  • tradursi in: to result in, to turn into
  • traduttore, traditore: translator, traitor. A saying about how much any translation betrays the original.
  • tradurre alla lettera: to translate literally

Common mistakes

  • Ho tradotto la lettera ieri sera., not Ho traduto la lettera ieri sera. (I translated the letter last night.). The participle of tradurre is irregular: tradotto. All -durre verbs work the same way: prodotto, ridotto.
  • Lo tradurrò domani., not Lo tradurò domani. (I'll translate it tomorrow.). The future keeps the double r of the infinitive tradurre: tradurrò, tradurrai, tradurremo.

Frequently asked questions

What is the past participle of tradurre?
Tradotto: ho tradotto, è stato tradotto. The double t pattern is shared by every -durre verb.
Is tradurre irregular?
Yes. It uses the stem traduc- for the present, imperfect, subjunctive and gerund, a contracted stem for the future and conditional (tradurrò), the participle tradotto, and the strong passato remoto tradussi.
Does tradurre take essere or avere?
Avere: ho tradotto, abbiamo tradotto. Only the pronominal tradursi takes essere.
