Sedersi means “to sit down” or “to take a seat.” It is a reflexive -ERE verb with a stem change from sed- to sied-, and its polite command si sieda is something every visitor hears.
Infinitive
sedersi
English
to sit down
Auxiliary
essere
Past participle
seduto
Gerund
sedendosi
Reflexive -ERE verb with a diphthong: the stem sed- becomes sied- when it is stressed. Present: mi siedo, ti siedi, si siede, si siedono, but ci sediamo, vi sedete. The present subjunctive splits the same way (che io mi sieda, che loro si siedano, but ci sediamo, vi sediate), and so does the imperative: siediti, si sieda, but sediamoci, sedetevi. In these tables the future and conditional also use sied-: mi siederò, mi siederei. The imperfect mi sedevo, the passato remoto mi sedei, si sedette, si sedettero, and the participle seduto keep sed-.
Sedersi is the action of sitting down: mi siedo qui, ci sediamo al tavolo, si è seduta accanto a me. The resulting position is usually expressed with essere seduto: sono seduto in prima fila, “I'm sitting in the front row.” Hosts and doctors invite you with si sieda, prego or, informally, siediti! The preposition depends on the seat: sedersi su una sedia, sedersi in poltrona, sedersi a tavola (to sit down to eat), sedersi per terra (on the floor). The base verb sedere also exists, mostly in written Italian and in the phrase stare seduto.
Sedersi takes essere, and the participle seduto agrees with the subject: mi sono seduto, la signora si è seduta, ci siamo seduti in terrazza. Essere seduto without the pronoun describes the position, not the action: è seduta vicino alla finestra.
The pronoun matches the subject in every tense: mi siedo, ti sedevi, si siederà, ci eravamo seduti, vi siedereste. It goes before conjugated forms. With the infinitive it attaches and agrees: posso sedermi?, vuoi sederti qui?, or with the modal first, mi posso sedere? The affirmative imperative attaches it to tu, noi and voi: siediti, sediamoci, sedetevi. With the formal Lei it stands in front: si sieda, prego. The negative tu command can be non sederti or non ti sedere, for example on a freshly painted bench. The gerund is sedendosi, sedendomi. Compound tenses use essere with agreement: si è seduta, vi siete seduti. The non-reflexive sedere is intransitive and means being seated, mostly in formal or written Italian: sedere in Parlamento, “to sit in Parliament.” In conversation, stare seduto or essere seduto take its place.

si sieda, prego: please take a seat. The polite formula in offices, shops and homes.

Common mistakes
Mi siedo qui., not Mi sedo qui. (I'll sit here.). When the stem is stressed it becomes sied-: mi siedo, ti siedi, si siede, si siedono. Only noi and voi keep sed-: ci sediamo, vi sedete.
Sono seduto in prima fila., not Mi sto sedendo in prima fila. (I'm sitting in the front row.). English “I'm sitting” describes a position. Italian uses essere seduto for that; mi sto sedendo means you are in the middle of sitting down.
Siediti!, not Sediti! (Sit down!). The tu imperative also takes the diphthong: siedi plus the pronoun ti gives siediti.
Mi siedo. The stem changes to sied- in the stressed forms: mi siedo, ti siedi, si siede, si siedono. Mi sedo is a common learner error.
Does sedersi take essere or avere?
Essere, like all reflexive verbs: mi sono seduto, si sono sedute. The participle seduto agrees with the subject.
How do you say “sit down, please” in Italian?
Formally, si sieda, prego. To a friend, siediti. To a group, sedetevi or accomodatevi, which is a very polite way to invite people to take a seat or come in.
Is sedersi irregular?
Yes, because of the sed-/sied- alternation in the present, the present subjunctive, the imperative, and in these tables the future and conditional (mi siederò, mi siederei). The imperfect, the passato remoto mi sedei, si sedette, and the participle seduto keep the regular stem.
