Bello in Italian

Bello means beautiful, handsome, nice, or good, and it is one of the most common adjectives in Italian. When it comes before a noun, it changes its ending the same way the definite article does: bel, bello, bell', bella, bei, begli, belle. After the noun or after a verb such as essere, it has the four regular forms bello, bella, belli, belle.

Abbiamo visto un bel film e dei begli spettacoli.

We saw a good film and some great shows.

What it is

Bello has two sets of forms. Before a noun, it copies the definite article that the noun takes: il ragazzo gives un bel ragazzo, lo spettacolo gives un bello spettacolo, gli occhi gives begli occhi. After the noun, or after è and sono, it is a normal adjective with four endings.

Che bel tempo. Il tempo è bello. (What nice weather. The weather is nice.) Bel before the noun, bello after the verb.

How to spot it

If bello comes before the noun, ask which definite article that noun takes. Il gives bel, lo gives bello, l' gives bell', la gives bella, i gives bei, gli gives begli, and le gives belle.

  • un bel ragazzo (a handsome young man (il ragazzo → bel))
  • un bell'albero (a beautiful tree (l'albero → bell'))
  • dei bei ricordi (some lovely memories (i ricordi → bei))
  • dei begli occhi (beautiful eyes (gli occhi → begli))

The article before bello agrees with bello, not with the noun. So it is un bello zaino, not uno bello zaino, because the word right after the article starts with b.

Common Bello Examples in Italian

Bello before and after the noun:

Before a Singular Noun

Oggi fa bel tempo.
The weather is nice today.
È stato un bello spettacolo.
It was a great show.
È un bell'uomo.
He's a handsome man.
Firenze è una bella città.
Florence is a beautiful city.

Fa bel tempo is the standard way to say the weather is nice.

Before a Plural Noun

Ho dei bei ricordi di quell'estate.
I have lovely memories of that summer.
Hai dei begli occhi.
You have beautiful eyes.
Ho comprato delle belle scarpe.
I bought some nice shoes.

Bei before most consonants, begli before a vowel, z, or s + consonant, belle for every feminine plural.

After the Noun or a Verb

Questi fiori sono belli.
These flowers are beautiful.
Le tue foto sono molto belle.
Your photos are very nice.

After essere, bello has only the regular forms: bello, bella, belli, belle. Bel and begli never appear here.

Everyday Expressions

Che bello, domani è festa.
How great, tomorrow is a holiday.

Che bello is one of the most common reactions in spoken Italian. It means how nice or how great.

How Bello Changes Its Form

If you know the definite articles, you already know the forms of bello before a noun.

Before the Noun: Bel Where the Noun Takes Il

A masculine noun that takes il (il ragazzo, il film, il tempo) has bel in front of it. Bello loses its final syllable, the same way il is shorter than lo.

Marco è un bel ragazzo.

Marco is a handsome young man.

il → bel.

Bello Where the Noun Takes Lo

Before s + consonant, z, gn, and ps, where the noun takes lo, bello keeps its full form: un bello spettacolo, un bello zaino.

Hai un bello zaino.

You've got a nice backpack.

lo → bello.

Bell' Before a Vowel

Before a vowel, bello elides to bell', like l'. With feminine nouns the elision is optional, so una bell'idea and una bella idea are both correct.

Hanno un bell'appartamento in centro.

They have a nice flat in the centre.

l' → bell'.

Bei and Begli in the Plural

In the masculine plural, bello follows i and gli: bei libri, bei ragazzi, but begli occhi, begli amici, begli spettacoli. The feminine plural is always belle.

Ci sono dei bei negozi in questa via.

There are some nice shops on this street.

i → bei, gli → begli.

After the Noun or After Essere: Regular Forms

When bello follows the noun or a verb, it behaves like any adjective in -o: bello, bella, belli, belle. Putting bello after the noun (un ragazzo bello) is possible, but it sounds more emphatic than the normal order.

La casa è bella e anche il giardino è bello.

The house is beautiful and so is the garden.

è bello, sono belli.

Common Mistakes with Bello

Incorrect: È un bello ragazzo. (He's a handsome young man.)

Correct: È un bel ragazzo. (He's a handsome young man.)

Ragazzo takes il, so bello becomes bel before it. Bello before the noun is only for words that take lo.

Incorrect: Hai dei belli occhi. (You have beautiful eyes.)

Correct: Hai dei begli occhi. (You have beautiful eyes.)

Before the noun, the masculine plural follows i and gli. Occhi takes gli, so the form is begli. Belli is only for after the noun or after sono.

Incorrect: Il film è bel. (The film is good.)

Correct: Il film è bello. (The film is good.)

Bel only exists directly before a noun. After essere, use the full regular form.

Incorrect: Ho uno bello zaino. (I have a nice backpack.)

Correct: Ho un bello zaino. (I have a nice backpack.)

The article agrees with the word right after it, which is bello. Bello starts with b, so the article is un, even though zaino on its own would take uno.

Bello Beyond Beautiful

Bello does more work than its English translations suggest, and its forms match two other common words.

Bello as an intensifier

Before a noun, bello can mean really or quite, the way English uses a good or a real.

Ho una bella fame.
I'm really hungry.
Ci vuole un bel po' di tempo.
It takes quite a lot of time.
Non ho capito un bel niente.
I didn't understand a thing.

These are informal but very common. Un bel po' (quite a lot) is especially frequent.

Quello follows the same pattern

Quello (that) changes before a noun exactly like bello: quel, quello, quell', quella, quei, quegli, quelle.

quel ragazzo
that young man
quello zaino
that backpack
quell'albero
that tree
quegli amici
those friends

Learn the two words together. If you know quei libri, you know bei libri.

Buono follows the indefinite article

Buono also shortens before a noun, but it follows un, uno, una, un' instead of il and lo: buon vino, buono studente, buona pizza, buon'amica.

un buon vino
a good wine
una buon'amica
a good friend (female)

Buon before a masculine vowel has no apostrophe: un buon amico, like un amico.

Bello FAQs

Why does bello change to bel?
Before a noun, bello follows the same pattern as the definite article. Where the noun takes il, bello shortens to bel: il ragazzo, un bel ragazzo. Where it takes lo, bello stays whole: lo zaino, un bello zaino.
Is it bei or begli?
It depends on the noun. Use bei where the noun takes i (bei libri, bei ragazzi) and begli where it takes gli, before a vowel, z, or s + consonant (begli occhi, begli zaini, begli spettacoli).
Can bello go after the noun?
Yes. After the noun, or after a verb such as essere, it uses the regular forms bello, bella, belli, belle: la casa è bella. Un ragazzo bello is grammatical but more emphatic than un bel ragazzo, which is the normal order.
Can I use bello for a man?
Yes. Bello means handsome when it describes a man: è un bel ragazzo, è un bell'uomo. Bella is used for a woman. Italians also use bello for things, places, and events, where English would say nice, lovely, or good.
Does buono change like bello?
Buono also changes before a noun, but it follows the indefinite article instead: buon (like un), buono (like uno), buona, and buon' (like un'). So it is un buon vino, un buono studente, una buona idea, una buon'amica.
