Vers vs. Envers: Two French Words for Towards
Both words translate as towards. Vers marks a physical direction or an approximate time: il marche vers la gare, vers midi. Envers marks an attitude held towards a person: sa générosité envers ses voisins. The two are never interchangeable.
Nous marchons vers la maison, reconnaissants envers nos voisins.
We're walking towards the house, grateful to our neighbours.
What it is
English towards does two quite different jobs: it points a body in a direction, and it describes how you feel about someone. French splits those jobs between two words. Vers handles movement and time, envers handles feelings and obligations, and the split is absolute.
Elle a couru vers lui, malgré sa méfiance envers les inconnus. — She ran towards him, despite her distrust of strangers.
How to spot it
Ask whether something is moving. If a body, a vehicle or a clock hand is heading somewhere, use vers. If the sentence is about respect, kindness, cruelty or duty, use envers.
- Il avance vers la porte. — He's moving towards the door. (movement)
- vers dix heures — around ten o'clock (approximate time)
- son respect envers ses professeurs — his respect for his teachers (attitude)
- mes devoirs envers ma famille — my duties towards my family (obligation)
Envers is almost always preceded by a noun naming a feeling or an obligation. If no such noun is present, the word you want is probably vers.

Common Vers vs. Envers Examples in French
The two prepositions in their own territory:
Vers for Direction
- La foule se dirige vers la place.
- The crowd is heading for the square.
- Tourne-toi vers la fenêtre.
- Turn towards the window.
- Le fleuve coule vers le nord.
- The river flows northwards.
- Nous roulions vers Toulouse.
- We were driving towards Toulouse.
Vers gives a direction without promising arrival. For a destination actually reached, French uses à or jusqu'à.
Vers for Approximate Time
- On se retrouve vers sept heures.
- We'll meet at about seven.
- Il est rentré vers minuit.
- He got home around midnight.
- vers la fin de la semaine
- towards the end of the week
- Le village a été construit vers 1850.
- The village was built around 1850.
This is one of the most frequent uses of vers in speech, and there is no equivalent use of envers.
Envers for Attitudes
- Il est très patient envers ses élèves.
- He's very patient with his pupils.
- Sa méfiance envers les journalistes est connue.
- His distrust of journalists is well known.
- Nous avons une responsabilité envers eux.
- We have a responsibility towards them.
- Elle a été injuste envers sa sœur.
- She was unfair to her sister.
English often uses to or with here rather than towards: patient with, unfair to. French keeps envers throughout.
À l'envers and Its Family
- Tu as mis ton pull à l'envers.
- You've put your jumper on inside out.
- Le tableau est accroché à l'envers.
- The picture is hanging upside down.
- Il a tout compris à l'envers.
- He got the whole thing back to front.
- Elle lit la liste à l'envers.
- She's reading the list backwards.
À l'envers is an adverb, not a preposition, and nothing follows it. Its opposite is à l'endroit, the right way round.
How to Keep Them Apart
One test settles the choice, and three further details cover the remaining uses.
Physical or Moral?
Vers belongs to the physical world: space, time, orientation. Envers belongs to the moral one: feelings, duties, behaviour towards people. Nothing overlaps, so the question is always answerable.
Il s'est montré généreux envers nous, puis il est parti vers la sortie.
He was generous to us, then he headed for the exit.
Space and time → vers. People and feelings → envers.
Envers Needs a Person
The complement of envers is almost always a person or a group. You can be loyal envers ses amis but not envers la table, because objects cannot be the target of an attitude.
Sa loyauté envers ses collègues est totale.
His loyalty to his colleagues is absolute.
envers + person.
Vers Softens Numbers as Well as Times
With a date, an age or a quantity, vers means roughly. Environ and autour de do the same work, and all three are interchangeable in most sentences.
Elle a commencé à peindre vers la quarantaine.
She started painting around the age of forty.
vers + number = about.
À l'envers Is Frozen
Envers survives as an adverb only inside the fixed phrase à l'envers, which describes something reversed, inverted or misunderstood. It takes no complement at all.
Ta chemise est à l'envers.
Your shirt is on inside out.
à l'envers = the wrong way round.
Vers Has Homophones Worth Knowing
Spoken vers sounds identical to vert (green), verre (glass), ver (worm) and the noun vers (a line of poetry). Only context and spelling distinguish them.
Il marche vers le mur vert avec un verre à la main.
He's walking towards the green wall with a glass in his hand.
vers, vert, verre, ver: same sound.
Common Mistakes with Vers vs. Envers
Incorrect: Il est très gentil vers moi. — He's very kind to me.
Correct: Il est très gentil envers moi. — He's very kind to me.
Kindness is an attitude, not a direction of travel, so it takes envers. Avec is also possible here, but vers is not.
Incorrect: Je marche envers la gare. — I'm walking towards the station.
Correct: Je marche vers la gare. — I'm walking towards the station.
Envers cannot express movement. Physical direction always takes vers, and a station cannot be the object of a feeling.
Incorrect: Elle marche à la porte. — She's walking to the door.
Correct: Elle marche vers la porte. — She's walking to the door.
English walks to the door describes a direction, and French needs vers for that. Marcher à la porte would suggest the door is where the walking happens.
Incorrect: Ton tee-shirt est en l'envers. — Your T-shirt is on inside out.
Correct: Ton tee-shirt est à l'envers. — Your T-shirt is on inside out.
The expression is fixed with à. En l'envers does not exist, and neither does the bare envers in this sense.
Approximation, Reversal and One Set Phrase
Beyond the basic split, these are the uses that appear most often in real French.
Saying about or around
Vers is the shortest way to make a time or a date approximate. It goes directly in front of the number, with no article.
- Je passerai vers quatorze heures.
- I'll drop by around two.
- Il est né vers 1970.
- He was born around 1970.
- Vers la fin du film, tout s'éclaire.
- Towards the end of the film, everything becomes clear.
- On arrive vers le soir.
- We'll get there towards evening.
Vers les huit heures, with an article, is common in speech but avoided in careful writing.
Envers et contre tout
One idiom uses envers with no person at all. Envers et contre tout means in spite of everything, and it is fixed in that form.
- Elle a défendu son projet envers et contre tous.
- She defended her project against all opposition.
- Il y croit encore, envers et contre tout.
- He still believes in it, in spite of everything.
The variant envers et contre tous, with an -s, refers to people rather than circumstances. Both are current.
Nouns that call for envers
A predictable set of abstract nouns takes envers: le respect, la gentillesse, la cruauté, la méfiance, la haine, une dette, un devoir, une responsabilité.
- son attitude envers les nouveaux venus
- his attitude towards newcomers
- un devoir envers la société
- a duty towards society
- de la cruauté envers les animaux
- cruelty to animals
- sa dette envers ses parents
- his debt to his parents
À l'égard de and vis-à-vis de are close synonyms and slightly more formal: son attitude à l'égard des nouveaux venus.
Vers vs. Envers FAQs
- What's the difference between vers and envers?
- Vers is physical: direction of movement, orientation, or an approximate time (il court vers la sortie, vers huit heures). Envers is moral: how someone behaves or feels towards another person (sa gentillesse envers moi). English towards covers both.
- How do you say around eight o'clock in French?
- Vers huit heures. Vers is the standard way to make a time approximate, and it works for dates and ages too: vers 1990, vers la trentaine. Environ and autour de are alternatives, and both are slightly heavier.
- What does à l'envers mean?
- The wrong way round: inside out for clothes, upside down for a picture, backwards for a list. Tu as mis ton pull à l'envers. It is an adverb, so nothing follows it, and its opposite is à l'endroit.
- Can I use envers with a thing rather than a person?
- Very rarely. Envers takes a person or a group, because it expresses an attitude. For a thing you would use à l'égard de or vis-à-vis de: sa méfiance à l'égard de cette théorie.
- What does envers et contre tout mean?
- In spite of everything, or against all odds: il a continué, envers et contre tout. It is the one idiom where envers takes no person, and it is fixed in that shape, so nothing in it can be changed.
