The Preposition En in French: In, To, By, and Made Of
The preposition en means in, to, by, or made of, and its defining habit is that it takes no article. That single trait ties together en France, en voiture, en bois, en retard, and en deux heures, and it separates en from dans, which almost always brings an article with it.
Nous passons l'été en Italie.
We're spending the summer in Italy.
What it is
En looks like a small word doing an unreasonable number of jobs, until you notice what all its uses share: the noun after it stands bare, with no le, la, un, or une. That bareness makes the noun general rather than particular, which is exactly what you want for a country, a season, a material, a mode of transport, or a state you are in.
en France, en été, en voiture, en bois, en retard — in France, in summer, by car, made of wood, late
How to spot it
If the English idea is general rather than pointing at one specific thing, and no article feels natural, en is usually the preposition.
- en France — in France (a feminine country)
- en janvier — in January
- en avion — by plane
- en colère — angry
The pronoun en, as in j'en ai deux, is a different word entirely. This page is about the preposition.

Common En Preposition Examples in French
En in each of its main roles:
Countries and Regions
- Elle habite en Italie depuis trois ans.
- She's been living in Italy for three years.
- Nous allons en Chine cet automne.
- We're going to China this autumn.
- Il travaille en Iran.
- He works in Iran.
- Ils voyagent en Europe centrale.
- They're travelling in central Europe.
Feminine countries take en, and so do masculine ones beginning with a vowel, which is why Iran and Israël pattern with France rather than with Portugal.
Time
- Il est né en 1998.
- He was born in 1998.
- On se voit en septembre ?
- Shall we meet in September?
- En hiver, il neige souvent ici.
- In winter it often snows here.
- J'ai tout fini en une heure.
- I finished everything in an hour.
Spring is the exception among the seasons and takes au: au printemps, but en été, en automne, en hiver.
Transport, Materials, Languages
- Nous y sommes allés en voiture.
- We went there by car.
- C'est une bague en or.
- It's a gold ring.
- Elle portait un pull en laine.
- She was wearing a woollen jumper.
- Le film est en version originale, en anglais.
- The film is in the original version, in English.
Vehicles you sit inside take en; those you sit on take à: à vélo, à cheval, à pied.
States and Situations
- Je suis en retard, désolé.
- I'm late, sorry.
- Elle est en vacances jusqu'à lundi.
- She's on holiday until Monday.
- La voiture est en panne.
- The car has broken down.
- Il est en train de dormir.
- He's asleep at the moment.
Être en train de is the French way of insisting that something is happening right now, since there is no separate progressive tense.
How En Works
One structural fact and four consequences of it cover everything the preposition does.
En Takes No Article
This is the rule from which everything else follows. En France, en voiture, en bois, en colère: the noun is bare in every case, which makes it general rather than one particular instance. Dans is the preposition that takes articles.
Il est parti en vacances en Espagne.
He's gone on holiday to Spain.
en + bare noun.
Country Gender Decides Between En and Au
Feminine countries take en, masculine ones take au, and plurals take aux. Any country beginning with a vowel takes en whatever its gender, so en Iran and en Israël sit alongside en France while au Portugal and au Japon do not.
Nous sommes allés au Japon, puis en Corée.
We went to Japan, then to Korea.
en France, au Japon, aux Pays-Bas.
En Plus a Duration Measures the Work
En deux heures is the time the task consumed. It says nothing about when the task starts, which is the job of dans. J'ai réparé le vélo en une heure describes the effort; je réparerai le vélo dans une heure describes the schedule.
Elle a lu le livre en deux jours.
She read the book in two days.
en + duration = how long it took.
Materials Take En, Purposes Take À
En bois says what something is made of. À plus a noun says what it is for. That is the difference between une tasse en porcelaine, a porcelain cup, and une tasse à café, a coffee cup.
Une boîte en carton pour les documents.
A cardboard box for the documents.
made of → en, meant for → à.
En Plus a Present Participle Is the Gérondif
En followed by a form in -ant means while doing or by doing, and the two verbs always share the same subject. En sortant, j'ai croisé le voisin means I met the neighbour as I was leaving, not as he was.
On apprend en faisant des erreurs.
You learn by making mistakes.
en + -ant = while or by doing.
Common Mistakes with En Preposition
Incorrect: Les fleurs sortent en le printemps. — The flowers come out in spring.
Correct: Les fleurs sortent au printemps. — The flowers come out in spring.
Spring is the one season that takes au rather than en. The other three follow the usual pattern: en été, en automne, en hiver.
Incorrect: Je vais en Portugal en juillet. — I'm going to Portugal in July.
Correct: Je vais au Portugal en juillet. — I'm going to Portugal in July.
Le Portugal is masculine and begins with a consonant, so it takes au. En is reserved for feminine countries and for any country beginning with a vowel.
Incorrect: J'ai réparé le vélo dans une heure. — I fixed the bike in an hour.
Correct: J'ai réparé le vélo en une heure. — I fixed the bike in an hour.
The sentence is about how long the job took, which is en. Dans une heure would mean the repair is going to start an hour from now, which contradicts the past tense.
Incorrect: Le livre est écrit en le français. — The book is written in French.
Correct: Le livre est écrit en français. — The book is written in French.
En never takes an article except in a few fixed formal phrases. Language names stand bare after it, exactly as materials and modes of transport do.
The Gérondif, Countries, and the Rare En With an Article
One construction and two exception lists cover the parts of en that cannot be worked out from the general rule.
En plus a present participle
The gérondif expresses two actions by the same subject, either at the same time or one as the means to the other.
- Il chante en travaillant.
- He sings while he works.
- En arrivant, j'ai vu la lumière allumée.
- As I arrived, I saw the light was on.
- On apprend beaucoup en voyageant.
- You learn a lot by travelling.
- Tout en marchant, elle réfléchissait.
- As she walked, she was thinking.
Tout en adds emphasis on the simultaneity, and often a hint of contrast between the two actions.
Which preposition for which country
Feminine countries take en, masculine take au, plurals take aux, and small islands usually take à.
- en France, en Belgique, en Allemagne
- in France, in Belgium, in Germany
- au Japon, au Maroc, au Canada
- in Japan, in Morocco, in Canada
- aux Pays-Bas, aux États-Unis
- in the Netherlands, in the United States
- à Cuba, à Madagascar, à Chypre
- in Cuba, in Madagascar, in Cyprus
Countries ending in -e are usually feminine, with a handful of exceptions including le Mexique and le Cambodge.
The few en phrases that keep an article
A small closed set of formal expressions has held on to its article, and they simply have to be learned.
- en l'honneur de nos invités
- in honour of our guests
- en l'absence du directeur
- in the director's absence
- en l'an 2000
- in the year 2000
- en la matière
- in this respect, on this subject
These are relics rather than a productive pattern. You cannot extend the list by analogy.
En Preposition FAQs
- What does the preposition en mean in French?
- Depending on what follows, it means in, to, by, or made of. En France is in France, en voiture is by car, en bois is made of wood, and en retard is late. What unites them is that the noun after en carries no article.
- When do I use en instead of au for a country?
- Use en with feminine countries and with any country beginning with a vowel: en France, en Italie, en Iran. Use au with masculine countries beginning with a consonant: au Portugal, au Japon. Plural countries take aux: aux Pays-Bas.
- What's the difference between en deux heures and dans deux heures?
- En deux heures is how long something takes: je l'ai fait en deux heures. Dans deux heures is when it will happen: je le ferai dans deux heures. Both are grammatical, so choosing the wrong one gives a sentence that means something you did not intend.
- What does en plus an -ant form mean?
- It is the gérondif, and it means while doing or by doing. En sortant, j'ai fermé la porte means as I left, I closed the door; on apprend en pratiquant means you learn by practising. Both verbs must share the same subject.
- Is the preposition en the same as the pronoun en?
- No, they are different words that happen to be spelled alike. The preposition sits in front of a noun, as in en France. The pronoun replaces a de phrase and sits in front of a verb, as in j'en ai deux, I have two of them.
