Su in Italian
Su is the Italian preposition for on and onto, and it also means about a topic (un libro sull'arte), out of in ratios (tre su dieci), and around with approximate amounts. Before a definite article it fuses into sul, sullo, sull', sulla, sui, sugli, or sulle. Used on its own, su is also an adverb meaning up.
Le chiavi sono sul tavolo.
The keys are on the table.
What it is
Su places something on a surface (sul tavolo), names the subject of a book, film, or talk (un documentario sugli squali), gives a ratio (otto su dieci), and estimates an amount (costa sui venti euro). It is also the adverb for up: vieni su means come up.
il libro è sul letto (the book is on the bed), un film sulla guerra (a film about the war), nove su dieci (nine out of ten).
How to spot it
Ask whether English has on, onto, about, or out of. Italian also uses su in a few places where English says in: sul giornale (in the newspaper), sull'albero (in the tree).
- Il gatto dorme sul divano. (The cat is sleeping on the sofa.)
- Ho letto un articolo sulla dieta mediterranea. (I read an article about the Mediterranean diet.)
- Tre studenti su quattro hanno passato l'esame. (Three out of four students passed the exam.)
- Mio zio avrà sui sessant'anni. (My uncle must be about sixty.)
Before a personal pronoun, su usually adds di: su di me, su di te, su di lui (on me, on you, about him).

- I left my jacket on the chair.
- C'è un uccello sull'albero.

- We're watching a documentary about sharks.
- Ho una domanda sull'esercizio.
- I have a question about the exercise.
Su for about is common with books, films, articles, questions, and opinions.

With an estimate, su fuses with the plural article: sui trenta euro, sulle cento persone.

How Su Works
Five habits explain almost every appearance of su in a sentence.
Su Plus the Article Always Fuses
Whenever su comes before il, lo, l', la, i, gli, or le, the two become one word: sul, sullo, sull', sulla, sui, sugli, sulle.
Ho messo i piatti sulla tavola.
I put the plates on the table.
su + la = sulla.
Su Di Before Pronouns
Before me, te, lui, lei, noi, voi, and loro, su usually adds di. The form without di exists, but su di is the everyday choice.
Posso contare su di te?
Can I count on you?
su di me, su di te, su di noi.
Su With Numbers: Out Of and About
Between two numbers, su means out of. Before a single number with the article, it means about or around. Italian university marks are given out of thirty, so you will often hear ventotto su trenta.
Ho preso ventotto su trenta.
I got twenty-eight out of thirty.
otto su dieci, sui trenta euro.
Su Without a Noun Means Up
As an adverb, su means up, and giù means down. On its own, su is also an exclamation meaning come on.
Vieni su, la cena è pronta.
Come up, dinner's ready.
su = up, giù = down.
Su Where English Says In
Newspapers, magazines, and websites take su, and so do trees. English says in the newspaper and in the tree; Italian says sul giornale and sull'albero.
Ho letto la notizia sul giornale.
I read the news in the newspaper.
sul giornale, sul sito, sull'albero.
Common Mistakes with Su
Incorrect: Il libro è su il tavolo. (The book is on the table.)
Correct: Il libro è sul tavolo. (The book is on the table.)
Su and il must fuse into sul. The same is true for every definite article.
Incorrect: Il vaso è sul scaffale. (The vase is on the shelf.)
Correct: Il vaso è sullo scaffale. (The vase is on the shelf.)
Scaffale starts with s + consonant, so its article is lo. The fused form follows the article: su + lo = sullo.
Incorrect: Tre di dieci studenti parlano inglese. (Three out of ten students speak English.)
Correct: Tre studenti su dieci parlano inglese. (Three out of ten students speak English.)
Out of in a ratio is su, not di, and the noun usually sits between the two numbers.
Incorrect: un libro circa la storia (a book about history)
Correct: un libro sulla storia (a book about history)
In everyday Italian, circa means approximately, not about a topic. For a topic, use su or di.
Su With the Definite Article
Su never stands next to a definite article in running Italian. The two fuse into one word, and su keeps its shape.
Su with each definite article
Choose the article the noun takes on its own, then attach it to su.

In use: sul tavolo, sullo scaffale, sull'albero, sulla sedia, sui libri, sugli scaffali, sulle scale.
