Spanish Conditional: 40+ Examples by Use
The Spanish conditional (yo iría, tú irías, él iría...) expresses hypotheticals (yo iría = I would go), polite requests (¿podrías?), softened opinions (diría que...), future-in-the-past (dijo que vendría), and conjecture about the past (serían las tres). 40+ examples here.
Yo iría al cine. ¿Podrías ayudarme?
I would go to the movies. Could you help me?
What it is
The conditional tense (yo iría, tú irías, él iría) is Spanish's way to express what would happen, polite requests, and hypothetical situations. It looks like the future tense + imperfect endings (-ía / -ías / -ía / -íamos / -íais / -ían).
Yo iría al cine si tuviera tiempo (I would go to the movies if I had time). ¿Podrías ayudarme? (Could you help me?, polite request).
How to spot it
Conditional always ends in -ía / -ías / -ía / -íamos / -íais / -ían. Triggers: si + imperfect subjunctive (si tuviera... iría), polite requests (podrías, gustaría), softened opinion (yo diría), future-in-the-past (dijo que vendría).
- Yo iría. — I would go.
- ¿Podrías venir? — Could you come?
- Me gustaría un café. — I'd like a coffee.
Conditional = future stem (infinitive for regulars) + imperfect endings (-ía / -ías / etc.). Same irregulars as future: tendría, vendría, podría, sabría, querría, haría, diría, pondría.

Conditional expresses probability / conjecture about past events. Parallel to future tense for conjecture about present (serán las tres = it must be 3:00 now).
Suggestions and Advice (Deberías)
- Deberías estudiar más.
- You should study more.
- Tendrías que descansar.

- Yo le pediría perdón.
- I would apologize to him.
- Convendría hablar con ella.

Conditional softens advice / suggestions. Deberías (you should), podríamos (we could), tendrías que (you would need to) are common ways to suggest without commanding.
Conditional Formation and Use
Form: Infinitive + Imperfect Endings (-ía)
Take the infinitive (hablar, comer, vivir), add imperfect-like endings: -ía / -ías / -ía / -íamos / -íais / -ían. Hablaría, comería, viviría. Same endings for all conjugations. Always ends in -ía.
hablaría, comería, viviría.
Infinitive + -ía endings.
Inf. + -ía.
Same Irregulars as Future Tense
12 irregulars have a modified stem (same as future): tener > tendría, venir > vendría, poder > podría, saber > sabría, querer > querría, hacer > haría, decir > diría, poner > pondría, salir > saldría, haber > habría, valer > valdría, caber > cabría.
tendría, vendría, podría, sabría.
Same irregulars as future.
12 irregulars (same as future).
Conditional Pairs with Si + Imperfect Subjunctive
Hypothetical 'if X, then Y' uses si + imperfect subjunctive + conditional: Si tuviera dinero (impf. subj.), viajaría (conditional). The if-clause uses imperfect subjunctive; the result uses conditional.
Si tuviera dinero, viajaría.
If-clause structure.
Si + impf. subj., conditional.
Soften Statements + Requests
Adding conditional softens direct statements. Quiero (I want, direct) vs. querría / me gustaría (I'd like, polite). ¿Puedes? (direct) vs. ¿Podrías? (polite). Use conditional whenever extra politeness is needed.
Quiero vs. me gustaría.
Politeness softening.
Conditional = polite.
Common Mistakes with Spanish Conditional Examples
Incorrect: Yo hablaría mejor si yo estudio más. — I'd speak better if I studied more.
Correct: Yo hablaría mejor si estudiara más. — I'd speak better if I studied more.
The if-clause of a hypothetical pairs with imperfect subjunctive, not indicative. Si + imperfect subjunctive (estudiara) + conditional (hablaría). NOT si + indicative.
Incorrect: Yo iré al concierto si tuviera dinero. — I'd go to the concert if I had money.
Correct: Yo iría al concierto si tuviera dinero. — I'd go to the concert if I had money.
The if-clause uses imperfect subjunctive (tuviera), so the result uses conditional (iría), not future (iré). Future would mean 'I WILL go if I have money' (a real future possibility).
Incorrect: Tener-é razón. (irregular conditional) — I would be right.
Correct: Tendría razón. — I would be right.
Tener has irregular stem in conditional: tendr- (not tener-). Same as future. Tendría / tendrías / tendría / tendríamos / tendríais / tendrían.
Conditional in If-Clauses (Si + Imperfect Subjunctive)
Hypothetical If-Clauses
Spanish 'if X, then Y' for hypotheticals uses: si + imperfect subjunctive (X) + conditional (Y). Si tuviera dinero, viajaría. Si supiera la respuesta, te la diría. Si fuera tú, lo haría. The order can flip: Viajaría si tuviera dinero.
- Si tuviera dinero, viajaría.
- If I had money, I'd travel.
- Si supiera, te lo diría.
- If I knew, I'd tell you.
- Si fuera más alto, jugaría al baloncesto.
- If I were taller, I'd play basketball.
- Iríamos al cine si tuviéramos tiempo.
- We'd go to the movies if we had time.
- Si pudieras viajar a cualquier lugar, ¿adónde irías?
- If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
- Compraría una casa si ganara la lotería.
- I'd buy a house if I won the lottery.
This pattern is the foundation of hypothetical reasoning in Spanish. Note: real conditions (likely) use si + present + future: Si estudio, aprobaré (if I study, I'll pass). Hypothetical (less likely / impossible) uses si + impf. subj. + conditional.
Spanish Conditional Examples FAQs
- What is the Spanish conditional tense?
- Verb form expressing what WOULD happen (yo iría = I would go), polite requests (¿podrías?), softened opinions (yo diría que...), future-in-the-past (dijo que vendría), and conjecture about the past (serían las tres).
- How do I form the conditional?

- How do I use conditional with if-clauses?
- For hypothetical 'if X, then Y' use: si + imperfect subjunctive (the if-clause) + conditional (the result). Si tuviera dinero, viajaría (If I had money, I'd travel). Compare to real conditions (si + present + future): Si estudio, aprobaré.
- What's the difference between me gusta and me gustaría?
- Me gusta = I like (present, factual). Me gustaría = I'd like / I would like (conditional, polite request or wish). Me gusta el café (I like coffee) vs. Me gustaría un café (I'd like a coffee, polite request).
- How can I master the Spanish conditional?
- Drill the endings (-ía / -ías / -ía / -íamos / -íais / -ían) and the 12 irregular stems (same as future). Practice with: polite requests (¿podrías?), hypothetical clauses (si tuviera... iría), polite wants (me gustaría). Parrot's videos show natural conditional use.
