Protéger Conjugation: All Tenses of the French Verb “protéger”
Written by Camille Laurent, Lead French Curriculum Editor · Reviewed August 2026
Protéger means “to protect” — a person, a piece of skin, a file, a right. Its endings are those of any -er verb, but it carries two spelling changes at once, which makes it one of the most misspelled common verbs in French.
Protéger turns up early and everywhere: sunscreen protects your skin, a password protects an account, a law protects tenants. The reflexive se protéger is just as common (se protéger du soleil, se protéger contre le vol). Learners rarely have trouble with its meaning. They have trouble writing it, because two independent orthographic rules apply to the same verb and each one bites in a different set of forms.
Two changes are at work. First, the é of the last syllable becomes è whenever the ending that follows is silent: je protège, tu protèges, il protège, ils protègent, and the same throughout the subjunctive singular. Second, the g needs an e in front of a and o to stay soft: nous protégeons, je protégeais, le participe présent protégeant. The two rules never fire in the same form, which is the key insight — where you see è the ending is silent, and where you see ge the ending starts with a or o. Everything else keeps a plain é: vous protégez, nous protégions, and the whole future and conditional (je protégerai, je protégerais). The past participle is protégé, and the auxiliary is avoir.

Common mistakes with protéger
Writing nous protègons
✗ Nous protègons nos plantes du gel.
✓ Nous protégeons nos plantes du gel. — We protect our plants from frost.
Two things go wrong at once here. The ending -ons is pronounced, so the stem keeps é rather than è. And because -ons begins with o, the g needs an e in front of it to stay soft: protégeons. Without that e you would read a hard g, as in gomme.
Dropping the grave accent in je protège
✗ Je protége mes yeux du soleil.
✓ Je protège mes yeux du soleil. — I protect my eyes from the sun.
When the ending is silent, the vowel before it opens and the spelling has to follow: protège, protèges, protègent. This is the same alternation as in préférer / je préfère and acheter / j'achète. If you can hear the difference between protéger and protège, the accent is telling you what you already hear.
Keeping the e before an i
✗ Nous protégeions les plantes chaque hiver.
✓ Nous protégions les plantes chaque hiver. — We protected the plants every winter.
The extra e exists only to soften the g before a and o. Before an e or an i the g is already soft, so protégions, protégiez and protégez have no e after the g. Compare je protégeais (a follows, e needed) with nous protégions (i follows, no e).

Frequently asked questions
Why is it nous protégeons and not nous protégons?
Because of the g. In French, g is hard before a, o and u, and soft before e and i. To keep the soft sound of protéger in front of the ending -ons, an e is inserted: protégeons. The same rule gives nous mangeons and nous commençons (with a cédille in that case).
Is protéger an irregular verb?
Its endings are perfectly regular, so it is not irregular in the way prendre or pouvoir are. But it has two stem spellings, é and è, plus the inserted e before a and o, which is why tables usually class it apart. Learn the three shapes protège, protégeons and protégerai and the rest follows.
What is the past participle of protéger?
Protégé, with avoir as the auxiliary: j'ai protégé, nous avons protégé. It is also used as an adjective and a noun — un site protégé, une espèce protégée, and un protégé meaning someone under another person's patronage, which English borrowed unchanged.
Do you say protéger de or protéger contre?
Both exist. De is the default for shielding from something present or physical: se protéger du froid, du soleil, de la pluie. Contre suggests defending against a threat or an attack: se protéger contre le vol, contre une cyberattaque. In many sentences either preposition passes without comment.
How do you pronounce protège and protégeons?
In protège the last vowel is open, close to the e in “bet”, and the final -e is silent: “pro-TEZH”. In protégeons the é is closed, like the a in “gate”, and the -geons is “zhon”: “pro-tay-ZHON”. The accents are doing exactly what you hear.
