How Décéder behaves

You will read décéder far more often than you will say it. Hospitals, town halls, notaries and journalists use it because it is neutral and impersonal; it is the verb of paperwork. In conversation, French speakers say mourir, or a euphemism like partir or nous quitter. Knowing décéder matters for two reasons: you will need it to fill in a form or read an official letter, and it is one of the être verbs, so its past participle has to agree with the subject.

The endings of décéder are those of any -er verb, but the stem shifts. Where the ending is silent, the second é becomes è: je décède, tu décèdes, il décède, ils décèdent, and the same in the subjunctive. Where the ending is pronounced, the é stays: nous décédons, vous décédez, je décédais, nous décédions. The future and conditional are built on the full infinitive and keep the é in traditional spelling: je décéderai, je décéderais. The past participle is décédé, and because the auxiliary is être it behaves like an adjective: décédée, décédés, décédées.

Décéder takes être, not avoir: elle est décédée, mes grands-parents sont décédés. Never il a décédé. Because the auxiliary is être, the participle agrees with the subject in gender and number, exactly as it does with mourir, aller and partir.

Passé composé
Ma grand-mère est décédée en mars, à l'hôpital de Lyon.

Futur simple
Sans dépistage, davantage de patients décéderont de cette maladie.
Without screening, more patients will die of this disease.

Common mistakes with décéder

Using avoir instead of être

✗ Mon grand-père a décédé l'année dernière.

✓ Mon grand-père est décédé l'année dernière. — My grandfather died last year.

Décéder is a change-of-state verb, so it belongs to the small group that builds compound tenses with être. English “has died” pushes learners towards avoir. If you can say il est mort, you can say il est décédé; the structure is identical.

Forgetting agreement on the participle

✗ Ma tante est décédé en 2019.

✓ Ma tante est décédée en 2019. — My aunt died in 2019.

With être, the participle agrees with the subject: décédée for a woman, décédés for a group, décédées for a group of women. The extra e is silent, so nothing in the spoken sentence warns you that it is missing — this error only shows up in writing.

Using décéder in ordinary conversation

✗ Mon chat est décédé hier soir.

✓ Mon chat est mort hier soir. — My cat died last night.

Décéder is administrative and is used of people, not animals. Applied to a pet, or used when speaking to a grieving friend, it sounds like a form being read aloud. Mourir is the neutral verb in speech; keep décéder for documents, official announcements and reports.

Expressions with décéder

Frequently asked questions

Does décéder take avoir or être?
Être, always: je suis décédé, elle est décédée, ils sont décédés. It is a change-of-state verb like mourir, naître and partir. Because of that, the past participle agrees with the subject, which is the detail most learners miss when they write elle est décédé without the final e.
Is décéder a regular verb?
Its endings are completely regular for an -er verb, but its stem is not stable. The second é becomes è whenever the ending is silent: je décède, ils décèdent. It stays é when the ending is pronounced: nous décédons, je décédais, je décéderai. That accent shift is the only thing you have to watch.
What is the difference between décéder and mourir?
They describe the same event at different registers. Mourir is the ordinary word and works everywhere, including figuratively (je meurs de faim). Décéder is formal and administrative: it appears on certificates, in obituaries and in medical or legal reports, and it is used only of people. Both take être in compound tenses.
What is the past participle of décéder?
Décédé, which also functions as an adjective and a noun: la personne décédée, les décédés. With être it agrees with the subject, giving décédé, décédée, décédés, décédées. You will also see it in the fixed noun phrase un acte de décès, where décès is the related noun rather than a verb form.
How do you pronounce décéder?
Roughly “day-say-DAY”, with both accented e sounds closed. In je décède the middle vowel opens up because of the grave accent, closer to the e in “bed”, and the final -e is silent. So décédons and décède are stressed differently, which is exactly what the accent change is marking.
