Years in French: How to Say 1995, 2026, and the 1980s

A French year is read as a plain number with no word for year inside it: 1995 is mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-quinze, and 2026 is deux mille vingt-six. The preposition for a year is en, and French keeps two separate nouns for the concept: an for a counted year, année for a year as a stretch of time.

Elle est née en mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-quinze.

She was born in 1995.

What it is

English breaks a year into two halves and reads them as separate numbers: nineteen ninety-five. French reads the whole thing as one number, which means the word cent cannot be skipped. Mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-quinze is one number, not two.

1789 : mille sept cent quatre-vingt-neuf. 2026 : deux mille vingt-six. — 1789 and 2026, each read as a single number.

How to spot it

Check whether the year begins with a one or a two. Years in the 1000s can be read either as mille or as the older dix-neuf cent style; years from 2000 onwards only ever begin with deux mille.

  • en mille huit cents — in 1800
  • en dix-neuf cent quatorze — in 1914 (the shorter reading)
  • en deux mille huit — in 2008
  • au XXe siècle — in the 20th century

The preposition is en for a year, au for a century, and dans for a decade: en 2026, au XXIe siècle, dans les années 1990.

Common Years Examples in French

Years in the sentences they normally appear in:

Saying When Something Happened

Le mur est tombé en mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-neuf.
The wall came down in 1989.
Nous avons déménagé en deux mille dix-sept.
We moved in 2017.
Il a publié son premier roman en mille neuf cent soixante-douze.
He published his first novel in 1972.
La cathédrale a été achevée en mille trois cent quarante-cinq.
The cathedral was finished in 1345.

En is the only preposition here. There is no French equivalent of saying back in or in the year of.

Decades

la musique des années quatre-vingt
eighties music
dans les années soixante
in the sixties
au début des années deux mille
in the early 2000s
à la fin des années trente
in the late thirties

Written out in figures these are les années 1980 or, informally, les années 80.

Centuries and Long Periods

au XVIIe siècle
in the 17th century
Nous sommes au XXIe siècle.
We're in the 21st century.
Il vivait au IIIe siècle avant Jésus-Christ.
He lived in the 3rd century BC.
une église du Moyen Âge
a medieval church

Centuries are written with Roman numerals and a small e: le XVIIe siècle, read le dix-septième siècle.

Ages and Anniversaries

J'ai trente-deux ans.
I'm thirty-two.
Elle fête ses quarante ans en juin.
She's turning forty in June.
un enfant de six ans
a six-year-old child
Ça fait deux ans que j'apprends le français.
I've been learning French for two years.

Age uses avoir, not être, and the noun ans is never dropped: j'ai trente-deux, on its own, means nothing.

How French Reads a Year

The rules are the ordinary rules of French numbers, applied to a four-digit figure with no shortcuts.

A Year Is One Whole Number

English splits 1995 into nineteen and ninety-five. French reads it as one thousand nine hundred ninety-five, so mille and cent both have to be pronounced. Nothing links the parts: there's no et anywhere in the middle.

Je suis né en mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix-huit.

I was born in 1998.

mille + cent + the rest.

The Dix-Neuf Cent Style Is a Shorter Alternative

For years between 1100 and 1999, French allows the hundreds-only reading: dix-neuf cent quatorze instead of mille neuf cent quatorze. Both are correct and the shorter one is common in speech, but it stops working at 2000.

La guerre a commencé en dix-neuf cent quarante.

The war began in 1940.

1100–1999 only.

Cent Takes an S Only at the End

Multiplied cent agrees when nothing follows it, and stays bare when another number comes after. So 1800 is mille huit cents but 1810 is mille huit cent dix. The same logic governs quatre-vingts and quatre-vingt-un.

L'usine a ouvert en mille neuf cents et fermé en mille neuf cent trois.

The factory opened in 1900 and closed in 1903.

cents alone, cent before a number.

En for a Year, Au for a Century, Dans for a Decade

Each span of time has its own preposition, and they aren't interchangeable. A bare year takes en with no article; a century takes au because siècle is a masculine noun with le; a decade takes dans les because années is plural.

En mille neuf cent soixante-huit, au XXe siècle, dans les années soixante.

In 1968, in the 20th century, in the sixties.

en 2026, au XXIe siècle, dans les années 90.

Mil Belongs to Legal Documents

Older French wrote mil rather than mille in dates, and notaries and marriage certificates still do. You'll read it, but you shouldn't write it in ordinary prose.

Fait à Lyon, l'an mil neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix.

Done at Lyon, in the year 1990.

mil = archaic and formal, mille = normal.

Common Mistakes with Years

Incorrect: Je suis né en dix-neuf quatre-vingt-quinze. — I was born in 1995.

Correct: Je suis né en mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-quinze. — I was born in 1995.

This is English word order transplanted into French. Nineteen ninety-five reads the year as two numbers; French reads it as one, so cent has to be there.

Incorrect: Je suis vingt-cinq ans. — I'm twenty-five.

Correct: J'ai vingt-cinq ans. — I'm twenty-five.

French treats age as something you possess rather than something you are. The same logic governs j'ai faim and j'ai froid.

Incorrect: L'école a été construite en mille huit cent. — The school was built in 1800.

Correct: L'école a été construite en mille huit cents. — The school was built in 1800.

Cent multiplied by another number takes an s when nothing follows it. Mille huit cents ends there, so it agrees; mille huit cent vingt doesn't.

Incorrect: Il y a trois années, nous vivions à Nantes. — Three years ago we were living in Nantes.

Correct: Il y a trois ans, nous vivions à Nantes. — Three years ago we were living in Nantes.

After a bare number, French counts in ans. Années needs something describing it: trois années merveilleuses.

Years in Set Phrases and Documents

Three contexts have their own vocabulary, and all three come up early for anyone reading French.

New Year

The turn of the year is one of the few places where an and année sit side by side in fixed phrases, each locked in place.

Bonne année !
Happy New Year!
le jour de l'An
New Year's Day
On fête le Nouvel An chez nous.
We're celebrating New Year at our place.
Meilleurs vœux pour la nouvelle année.
Best wishes for the new year.

Bon an exists only inside the proverb bon an, mal an, meaning year in, year out.

Recurrence and duration

For anything that repeats, French reaches for an; for anything continuous, année.

tous les deux ans
every two years
Le loyer augmente d'année en année.
The rent goes up year after year.
Le musée est ouvert toute l'année.
The museum is open all year round.
Il gagne quarante mille euros par an.
He earns forty thousand euros a year.

Tous les ans and chaque année both mean every year and are equally common.

Institutional years

Schools, universities, and companies name their years with année and a hyphenated pair of figures.

l'année scolaire 2025-2026
the 2025–26 school year
Elle est en deuxième année de droit.
She's in her second year of law.
le bilan de l'exercice 2025
the 2025 financial year report

In this sense année is unavoidable: une deuxième an is not possible.

Years FAQs

How do you say 1995 in French?
Mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-quinze, read as the single number 1995. The alternative dix-neuf cent quatre-vingt-quinze is equally correct and slightly quicker to say. To place an event in that year, add en with no article: je suis arrivé en mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-quinze.
How do you say years after 2000 in French?
With deux mille and then the rest of the number: deux mille cinq for 2005, deux mille vingt-six for 2026. The hundreds-only reading isn't available here, so vingt cent vingt-six doesn't exist. The year 2000 itself is often called l'an deux mille.
What's the difference between an and année?
An counts years as units, so it follows numbers and appears in rate expressions: deux ans, par an, tous les ans. Année treats the year as a period with content, so it takes adjectives and ordinals: une bonne année, l'année dernière, l'année scolaire.
How do you say the eighties in French?
Les années quatre-vingt, written les années 1980 or les années 80. Use dans for the decade as a whole and au début or à la fin for its edges: dans les années soixante-dix, au début des années deux mille.
How do you write and say centuries in French?
With a Roman numeral and a superscript e: le XVIIe siècle, read le dix-septième siècle. The preposition is au: au XIXe siècle, in the nineteenth century. Anything before the common era adds avant Jésus-Christ, shortened to av. J.-C. in writing.
