Common Mispronunciations of Thank You

Not TANK-yoo

The th at the start is the voiceless th of think and three: the tongue tip touches the back of the top teeth and air passes over it. Replacing it with t is the most common substitution and turns thank into tank.

Not thank YOO

In the full phrase the stress sits on thank. You is weak and often shortens to a quick yuh: THANK-yuh. Stressing you only makes sense as a reply, as in No, thank YOU.

Tip: Practise the th by holding the tongue against the top teeth and blowing before you start the word: th-th-thank.
