Ver Conjugation: Every Tense with Examples

Ver means to see or to watch in Spanish, irregular in a few key spots. Yo veo (irregular -eo), irregular imperfect (veía), and an irregular past participle (visto).

Veo una película.

I'm watching a movie.

What it is

Ver means to see or to watch. It's mostly regular, but watch three irregular spots: yo veo (where you'd expect ve), the imperfect (veía, one of only three irregular imperfects in Spanish), and the past participle (visto).

In Veo una película (I'm watching a movie), veo is the yo form. Ver covers seeing things, watching shows, and meeting people (nos vemos = we'll see each other).

How to spot it

Look for ve- at the start of every form. Irregular spots: veo (yo present), veía / veías (imperfect), visto (past participle in compound tenses).

  • Veo a María todos los días. — I see María every day.
  • Veía la tele cuando llegaste. — I was watching TV when you arrived.
  • He visto esa película tres veces. — I've seen that movie three times.

Nos vemos (we'll see each other) is the everyday Spanish goodbye, like English see you.

Common Ver Conjugation Examples in Spanish

Ver covers visual perception, watching shows, and meeting people. Four key contexts:

Seeing People and Things

Veo a mi amiga.
I see my friend.
Ves esa casa?
Do you see that house?
Vimos un accidente.
We saw an accident.
Nunca lo había visto.
I'd never seen it.

Personal a is required before specific people (Veo a María), not before things (Veo el coche).

Watching (Shows, Movies, Sports)

Veo una serie nueva.
I'm watching a new series.
Vio el partido anoche.
He watched the game last night.
Vamos a ver una película.
We're going to watch a movie.

Ver doubles as English to watch for media. Mirar is also used but feels more deliberate / focused looking.

Meeting / See You Soon

Nos vemos mañana.
See you tomorrow.
¡Hasta luego, nos vemos!
See you later!
Te veo en el café.
I'll see you at the café.

Nos vemos is the default Spanish goodbye for friends, equivalent to English see you.

Figurative: Understanding / Realizing

Ya veo.
I see (I understand).
Veo lo que dices.
I see what you mean.
Veremos qué pasa.
We'll see what happens.

Just like English, ver also covers understanding or realizing something, not just visual seeing.

How to Conjugate Ver Across Tenses

Present, Irregular Yo (Veo); Other Forms Look -er-Regular

The yo form is veo (keeping the e of the stem and adding -o). Other forms drop to ves, ve, vemos, veis, ven, they look like a short -er verb.

Yo veo, tú ves, ella ve, nosotros vemos, vosotros veis, ellos ven.

I see, you see, she sees, we see, you all see, they see.

Veo is unusual because most -er verbs drop the stem vowel (como, not coemo). Ver keeps the e.

Preterite, Looks Like -er But Watch Accents

The preterite forms are vi, viste, vio, vimos, visteis, vieron, note that vi and vio carry no accents (unlike regular -er verbs).

Vi a María ayer.

I saw María yesterday.

Yo vi and él vio look like single-syllable forms, accents are dropped for short stems.

Imperfect, Irregular (Veía)

Ver has one of only three irregular imperfects in Spanish (the others are ser → era and ir → iba). Forms: veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veíais, veían.

De niña, veía dibujos animados cada sábado.

As a girl, I used to watch cartoons every Saturday.

The stem keeps the e, it's veía, not vía. Regular -er imperfect would drop the e.

Past Participle, Visto (Irregular)

The past participle is the irregular visto (not the expected vido). Used in all compound tenses: he visto, había visto, habré visto.

He visto esa película muchas veces.

I've seen that movie many times.

Same -isto pattern as escrito (escribir → escrito).

Common Mistakes with Ver Conjugation

Incorrect: Yo vo a mi amiga. — I see my friend. (wrong, yo form is veo, not vo)

Correct: Yo veo a mi amiga. — I see my friend.

The yo form of ver keeps the e: veo. Most -er verbs would drop it (como, debo, leo), but ver doesn't.

Incorrect: Vía a María ayer. — I saw María yesterday. (wrong, imperfect for one-shot past)

Correct: Vi a María ayer. — I saw María yesterday.

A specific past event (ayer) takes preterite (vi). Vía / veía is imperfect (for ongoing or habitual past).

Incorrect: He vido la película. — I've seen the movie. (wrong, past participle is visto, not vido)

Correct: He visto la película. — I've seen the movie.

The past participle of ver is the irregular visto. Vido is not a Spanish word.

Ver Across Every Tense

Three irregular spots: yo veo (present), veía (imperfect), visto (past participle).

Present (Yo Veo)

Yo veo keeps the e; other forms look like a short -er verb.

yo
él/ella/usted
nosotros
vosotros
ellos/ellas/ustedes

Ves and ven also serve as informal commands: ¡Ve a casa! (note: the imperative actually uses ve from ir, not ver, context-specific).

Preterite

Looks regular but vi and vio carry no accents because they're single-syllable.

yo
él/ella/usted
nosotros
vosotros
ellos/ellas/ustedes

Vi and vio look terse compared to regular -er preterites, that's the single-syllable accent rule at work.

Imperfect (Veía), One of 3 Irregular Imperfects

Veía / veías / veía / veíamos / veíais / veían. Keeps the e of the stem.

yo
él/ella/usted
nosotros
vosotros
ellos/ellas/ustedes

Only ver, ser, and ir have irregular imperfects in Spanish, every other verb is regular.

Future, Subjunctive, Past Participle

Future and conditional are regular. Subjunctive: vea, veas, vea. Past participle: visto.

yo (future)
yo (conditional)
yo (present subjunctive)
past participle
yo (present perfect)

Visto powers compound tenses and phrases like por lo visto (apparently).
