Pedir's present subjunctive: pida, pidas, pida, pidamos, pidáis, pidan. The e → i change applies to ALL six forms (no boot pattern). Typical of -ir verbs whose stem-change is e → i (pedir, servir, repetir, seguir).

What it is
Pedir's present subjunctive: pida, pidas, pida, pidamos, pidáis, pidan. Unlike other stem-changing -ir verbs, the e → i change applies in ALL six forms, even nosotros and vosotros (pidamos, pidáis). This pattern is shared by other e → i verbs (servir → sirva, repetir → repita, seguir → siga).
In Quiero que pidas ayuda (I want you to ask for help), pidas is the tú subjunctive of pedir. The wish trigger forces the mood shift.
How to spot it
Look for pid- in all six forms followed by -a endings: pida, pidas, pida, pidamos, pidáis, pidan. No reversion to e in nosotros / vosotros.
- Espero que pidas perdón. — I hope you apologize.
- Dudo que pidan cuenta. — I doubt they'll ask for the bill.
- Es necesario que pidamos disculpas. — It's necessary we apologize.
Pedir is hugely common in service contexts (restaurants, requests, asking for things), so its subjunctive shows up constantly in social and transactional Spanish.

How to Form the Subjunctive of Pedir
E → I in All Six Forms
Pedir's subjunctive uses pid- in ALL six forms, including nosotros (pidamos) and vosotros (pidáis). Unlike o → ue verbs (poder → puedan / podamos) or e → ie verbs (querer → quieran / queramos), the e → i change doesn't revert outside the boot.
pida, pidas, pida, pidamos, pidáis, pidan.
e → i throughout all six subjunctive forms.
e → i verbs: change everywhere, no reversion.
Why E → I Persists
Pedir, like other -ir e → i verbs (servir, repetir, seguir, vestir, conseguir), takes the e → i change throughout the subjunctive because the verb's underlying stem treats unstressed e as i. The same applies in the preterite third-person forms (pidió, pidieron) and the gerund (pidiendo).
pidamos, pidáis (no reversion to e).
All -ir e → i verbs follow this pattern.
Consistent pid- stem.
Regular -ir Endings, -a Vowels
Endings follow the standard -ir pattern: -a, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an. The vowel switch (subjunctive uses opposite vowel of infinitive) applies.
pida, pidas, pida, pidamos, pidáis, pidan.
Regular -ir subjunctive endings.
Standard subjunctive endings.
Same Triggers as All Subjunctives
Subjunctive pedir responds to all W.E.I.R.D.O. triggers. Common with recommendations (te recomiendo que pidas) and wishes (quiero que pidas).
Quiero que. Te recomiendo que. Es importante que.
Same triggers across all verbs.
Trigger + que = subjunctive.
Common Mistakes with Subjunctive of Pedir
Incorrect: Quiero que pides ayuda. — I want you to ask for help. (wrong, indicative after querer que)
Correct: Quiero que pidas ayuda. — I want you to ask for help.
After querer que, the dependent verb must be in the subjunctive. Pides is the indicative; pidas is the tú subjunctive with e → i.
Incorrect: Es importante que pedamos la cuenta. — It's important we ask for the check. (wrong, no e → i in nosotros)
Correct: Es importante que pidamos la cuenta. — It's important we ask for the check.
In -ir e → i verbs, the change persists in nosotros and vosotros. The correct form is pidamos (not pedamos, which would be a wrong reversion).
Incorrect: Sé que pida disculpas. — I know he's apologizing. (wrong, fact assertion takes indicative)
Correct: Sé que pide disculpas. — I know he's apologizing.
Saber que asserts a fact and takes the indicative (pide), not the subjunctive (pida). Only triggers expressing doubt, wish, or opinion force the subjunctive.

- What is the present subjunctive of pedir in Spanish?
- The present subjunctive of pedir is: pida, pidas, pida, pidamos, pidáis, pidan. The e → i change applies in all six forms, including nosotros (pidamos) and vosotros (pidáis), unlike other stem-changing -ir verbs.
- Why does pedir change e to i in all subjunctive forms?

- How is subjunctive pedir different from preguntar?
- Pedir = ask for something (a request for an object, favor, or service): que pidas ayuda, que pidas la cuenta. Preguntar = ask a question (request for information): que preguntes la hora, que preguntes dónde está. Both can take the subjunctive; pick the verb based on what you're asking for.
- What's the difference between pedir and pidir (which isn't a word)?
- Pedir is the only correct infinitive; pidir doesn't exist. The pid- stem only appears in conjugated forms (like pida, pido, pidió). The infinitive keeps the e: pedir.
- How can I learn subjunctive pedir naturally?
- Pedir appears constantly in service contexts: ordering at restaurants, asking for help, requesting favors, apologizing (pedir disculpas). Parrot's short-form videos surface these contexts in real conversation, so pida / pidas / pidamos become automatic with exposure.
