The Spanish present tense (presente de indicativo) describes current actions, habits, and general truths. Endings depend on verb type: -ar (hablo, hablas, habla), -er (como, comes, come), -ir (vivo, vives, vive).

What it is
The Spanish present tense (presente de indicativo) describes what's happening right now, habits, and general truths. Conjugation depends on whether the verb ends in -ar (hablo, hablas), -er (como, comes), or -ir (vivo, vives). Many high-frequency verbs are irregular or stem-changing.
In Hablo español (I speak Spanish), hablo is the regular -ar yo present. The present covers current actions (Hablo ahora), habits (Hablo español a diario), and general truths (El sol sale por el este).
How to spot it
Regular -ar: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an. Regular -er: -o, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en. Regular -ir: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -ís, -en.
- Yo hablo español. — I speak Spanish. (regular -ar)

How to Form the Spanish Present Tense
Regular -ar Verbs
Drop -ar, add -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an. Hablar → hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis, hablan.
Yo hablo. Tú hablas. Nosotros hablamos.
I speak. You speak. We speak.
Most common verb type, hablar, cantar, trabajar, estudiar, llegar all follow.
Regular -er Verbs
Drop -er, add -o, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en. Comer → como, comes, come, comemos, coméis, comen.
Yo como. Tú comes. Nosotros comemos.
I eat. You eat. We eat.
Same yo (-o) as -ir verbs. Differs in nosotros (-emos vs. -imos).
Regular -ir Verbs
Drop -ir, add -o, -es, -e, -imos, -ís, -en. Vivir → vivo, vives, vive, vivimos, vivís, viven.
Yo vivo. Tú vives. Nosotros vivimos.
I live. You live. We live.
Only difference from -er is nosotros (-imos) and vosotros (-ís).
Stem-Changing Verbs
Some verbs change the stem vowel in stressed forms (yo, tú, él, ellos): e→ie (pensar → pienso), o→ue (dormir → duermo), e→i (pedir → pido), u→ue (jugar → juego). Nosotros / vosotros keep the original vowel.
Pienso (I think), puedo (I can), pido (I ask for), juego (I play).
Stem-change patterns trigger in 4 of 6 forms.
Dictionary entries often mark these: pensar (ie), dormir (ue), pedir (i).
Irregular Yo Forms
Many high-frequency verbs are only irregular in the yo form: tengo (tener), pongo (poner), salgo (salir), hago (hacer), vengo (venir), digo (decir), traigo (traer), conozco (conocer).
Yo tengo, yo hago, yo digo. Tú tienes, tú haces, tú dices.
Yo forms irregular; other forms follow stem-change or regular pattern.
If yo is irregular, the subjunctive is built from it: tengo → tenga, hago → haga.
Common Mistakes with Spanish Present Tense
Incorrect: Yo habla español. — I speak Spanish. (wrong, yo takes -o ending)
Correct: Yo hablo español. — I speak Spanish.
Subject-verb agreement: yo always takes -o in regular -ar/-er/-ir present. Hablo, como, vivo.
Incorrect: Nosotros comemos -er sound = ¿comemos? ✓, but: Vosotros comen. — You all eat. (wrong, vosotros takes -éis for -er verbs)
Correct: Vosotros coméis. — You all eat.
Vosotros endings: -áis (-ar), -éis (-er), -ís (-ir). Don't conflate with ellos (-an, -en, -en).
Incorrect: Pensamos pieno. (mixing stem change with nosotros) — Stem change shouldn't appear in nosotros. (only stressed forms)
Correct: Yo pienso. Nosotros pensamos. — I think. We think.
Stem changes apply only to stressed syllables (yo, tú, él, ellos). Nosotros and vosotros keep the original vowel: pensamos, pensáis.
