How to Use the Preterite of Estar

Memorize the U-Stem

Estar uses estuv- + irregular endings: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron. No accents anywhere.

Estuve, estuviste, estuvo, estuvimos, estuvisteis, estuvieron.

I was, you were, he/she was, we were, you all were, they were.

Same endings as other u-stem family verbs: tuve, anduve, pude, puse, supe.

Use for Bounded States

Preterite estar describes states with clear time boundaries, duration specified or implied.

Estuve enfermo tres días. Estuvieron juntos cinco años.

I was sick for three days. They were together for five years.

If the duration is specified or the state has clearly ended, preterite. For ongoing past descriptions, imperfect (estaba).

Use for Bounded Presence at a Place

Preterite estar describes being at a location for a specific duration. Imperfect describes background presence.

Estuve en Madrid una semana. Estaba en casa cuando llamaste.

I was in Madrid for a week. I was at home when you called.

If duration is specified → preterite. If used as background for another past event → imperfect.

Estar + Gerundio (Continuous Past)

Preterite estar + gerundio = bounded continuous action. Equivalent to was [verb]-ing for a specific period.

Estuve estudiando toda la noche. Estuvieron hablando dos horas.

I was studying all night. They were talking for two hours.

Use preterite + gerundio for bounded ongoing actions (with specified duration). Imperfect + gerundio for background scenes.

Common Mistakes with Preterite of Estar

Incorrect: Yo esté enfermo. — I was sick.

Correct: Yo estuve enfermo. — I was sick.

Estar is irregular in preterite, use estuv- stem. Don't apply regular endings.

Incorrect: Estuve enfermo cuando llegaste. — I was sick when you arrived.

Correct: Estaba enfermo cuando llegaste. — I was sick when you arrived.

For background states interrupted by another event, use imperfect (estaba). Preterite (estuve) bounds the state with a defined duration.

Incorrect: Estuve en la casa todo el tiempo. (mixing register) — I was at home the whole time.

Correct: Estuve en casa todo el tiempo. — I was at home the whole time.

Spanish typically drops the article: en casa, not en la casa (at home), unless emphasizing a specific house. Same with en el trabajo / en la escuela in some idioms.
